Non Governmental Organization (NGO)

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are non-profit citizen groups that operate independently of governments. They serve social or political purposes in a cooperative manner. The World Bank identifies two broad groups of NGOs: operational NGOs that focus on development projects, and advocacy NGOs that promote particular causes. NGOs must be independent of government control, are not political parties, and perform tasks without a profit-generating goal. They are funded through membership dues, private donations, sales of goods/services, and some rely on government grants.
