“We will be making our own number chart, dancing to a number song, and then building

a house with large foam blocks that have the numbers 0-20 on them.”

2. Review the numbers 0-10 by showing them only the numbers 0-10 on the number chart

(make sure the other numbers are cover 11-20,) count out loud as a class.

3. After the review, explain that it is time to move on to the rest of the numbers 11-20

4. Uncover the other numbers and count the numbers (11-20) out load with the students so

they get an idea of each number. (Point at each number on the number chart as they go

together till 20.

6. When done with counting, pass out the plain number charts to each of the students.

drawing tally marks at the bottom of that box to show the amount of that number.

“Now that everyone has a number chart, we will be making our own with the numbers 0-

20, using the two colors that we chose, one will be used to write the number and the

other to draw the tally marks at the bottom of the box. Make sure to follow along and fill

up your chart as we go with your markers.’’

 Show the example of how it will look to write the number and tally marks in the

same box, as shown below.

10. As a class fill up the number chart and call random names from the jar of popsicle sticks

with the student’s names, so they can come up and write the next number/tally mark

inside the box.

 Count each number as you move along and ask the class to say the number out

loud. (Make sure that each student is following along)

 When done, the chart should end up looking like the one below.

“Okay everyone, the next part of the lesson is a game that will include working together

as teams and building a house with the numbers 0-20, with large foam blocks.”

14. Pass out the foam blocks to each table, explain that they will be working with the people

at their table. Spread out the students in different parts of the classroom so they have

room to work in. Make sure that each table has a set of the foam blocks that has 21

blocks.

15. Before they start to build, pull up the picture of how the house is supposed to look after

they are done building it, which does not show the numbers on the blocks.

 As shown below.
16. Carefully explain that they must build the house starting with the number 0 at the bottom

and count by ones to get to 20, the students will arrange the numbers one by one until

they get to 20.

Give the students 20 minutes to do so.

“Each table got a set of 21 large foam blocks with the numbers 0-20 written on them,

everyone will work together to build a house with the foam blocks, that will look like the

one on the bored. You will need to start with the numbers 0 at the bottom and work your
