UNIT II Lesson 1. AGRICULTURE

The Philippines is known as an agricultural country. A lot of our countrymen are farmers
and they make food available to most people from all walks of life.

The Philippine’s major agricultural products include rice, coconuts, corn, sugarcane, bananas,


pineapples, and mangoes. Agriculture plays a significant role in the Philippine economy.
Involving about 40 percent of Filipino workers, it contributes an average of 20 percent to the
Gross Domestic Product.

What is Agriculture?

Agriculture the science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the
growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products.

Agriculture describes the practice of growing crops or raising animals. Someone who


works as a farmer is in the agriculture industry.

Types of Agriculture

 Crop farming is the cultivation of plants for food, animal foodstuffs, or other


commercial uses. A variety of techniques including organic production methods can be
used to manage crops.
Plants are classified according to agronomy, which refers to the production of
crops on a large scale.
 Grain or cereal crops- grown for their edible seed.
 Vegetables and food crops- consumed as food and eaten as cooked, raw or
as garnish and as spices.
 Legumes- include peanuts, peas, beans, lima beans soybeans and lentils.
 Sugar crops- grown for their sweet juice.
 Tuber crops- they are thickened underground stem
 Fiber crops- these are processed into raw materials
 Animal husbandry is the branch of agriculture concerned with animals that are raised
for meat, fiber, milk, eggs, or other products. It includes day-to-day care,
selective breeding and the raising of livestock.
 Breeding- refers to act of biological reproduction or maybe through
artificial means
 Livestock refers to domesticating bred of animals in an agricultural
location to produce food or raw materials and help in farm work.
 Poultry farming raising of domesticated fowls or birds for their meat, eggs feathers and
labor.
 Fishery is an activity of raising or harvesting fish and other aquatic life. Commercial
fisheries include wild fisheries and fish farms, both in fresh water and the oceans. 
Major agricultural systems include lowland irrigated farming, rainfed farming and upland
farming. Irrigated farm areas mainly grow rice and sugarcane whereas rainfed areas are planted
with coconut, corn and cassava. The Philippines' major agricultural products include rice,
coconuts, corn, sugarcane, bananas, pineapples, and mangoes.

Rice considered to be the staple food for every Filipinos, it is the only major cereal crop that
is primarily consumed by humans directly as harvested, and only wheat and corn are produced in
comparable quantity.

Corn is one of the most important staple crops in Visayas and in Mindanao.

Sugarcane as of 2005, the Philippines was the ninth largest sugar producer in the world and
second largest sugar producer among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
countries, after Thailand, according to Food and Agriculture Organization. 

Coconuts are tall palm tree that yields the coconut, which grows mainly by coastal beaches and
has become naturalized throughout the tropics. Many tropical economies are dependent upon its
products, which include copra and oil.

Mangoes in Guimaras known to be “Mango Country Capital of the Philippines” considered to be


the sweetest mango in the country.

Pineapples in Bukidnon known to be the “Pineapple Capital of the Philippines” because of its
large production.

Vegetables where Northern part of the country is rich just like in Benguet considered to be the
“Salad Bowl of the Philippines”
