1. What is the difference between Modern and postmodern
architecture?
Modernism and Postmodernism have very different
styles, mostly because Postmodernism started as
a countermovement to Modernism. In Modernism,
buildings were characterized by very stark, simple
designs with no ornaments or decorative elements.
Postmmodernism made a point of including
ornaments, and emphasized the need for color,
decoration, and visual interest in building design.

2.What is the artistics philosphy behind Postmodernism?
Postmodernists reject the Modernist idea that form
should strictly follow function. While they still
design buildings with a focus on function, they also
recognize the need for beauty and variation. Like
traditional art forms, features of Postmodern
architecture do not always have a direct, practical
purpose. However, Postmodernists believe that
these features are essential for intellectual
stimulation.

Student B: You are a museum visitor. Talk to Student
A about architectural styles of local buildings.
Suggested Answer!
A: Before we start the tour, does anyone have any questions?
B: Are we going to see a model of the Uptownwn Theater?
A: No. That is actually not Postmodern architecture.
B: İt's so bland. I was sure it wwould be part of the exhibit.
A:I think you're confusing Postmodernism with Modernism.
B: But the primary purpose of Postmodern buildings is to avoid ornaments.
A: Actually, it's the other way around. Strict functionalism is a feature of Modernism. But
Postmodernism is characterized by aesthetic appeal and visual interest.
B: I guess I had the two mixed up.
A: Let’s look at the first part of the exhibit. It's a large model of Albert Stadium. It's a
famous local example.
B: l'm confused. Most of it books like pure functionalism.
A: True. But it's dual purpose. Notice the elaborate paintings and sculptures around the
perimeter

Museum Tour; Feedback Form
-Which exhibit did you visit?
I visited the Postmodern images exhibit.
- What information did the tour guide cover?
The tour guide discussed the features of Postmodernism, including
the dual purpose emphasis on functionalism and aesthetic appeal
She pointed out how Albert Stadium is a famous example of
Postmodern architecture because it combines functionalism with
elaborate decoration.
- What was the most interesting fact you learned on the tour?
I didn't realize that Postmodernism put so much emphasis on art and
beauty. It is not similar to Modernism, as I assumed. Instead, it is the
countermovement to Modernism.
