Course Goals: Understanding of the basic principles that inform the design of building service systems,
including plumbing, heating – cooling – ventilating system, fire protection, lightning systems. At the
end of the course, the student should be familiar with;
• Water supply system to the buildings and its elements,
• Sanitary appliances,
• Designing wet spaces,
• Waste water, removal system and its elements,
• Sanitary application,
• Heating systems and their elements, integration of these systems and their elements with
architecture,
• Ventilation systems and their elements,
• Climatization systems and their elements,
• Fire control systems, sprinkler installation, active fire safety systems, staircase for fire escape
• Artificial lightning systems.
Learning Outcomes:
• Ability to plan the basic principles of emergency escape, life safety and fire protection systems.
• Ability to understand, select and evaluate the basic principles of building heating systems
design.
• Ability to select and evaluate the basic principles of building cooling and climatization systems
design.
• Ability to plan the basic principles of building electrical installation systems design.
• To gain knowledge about the basic principles of building cold and hot water supply systems
design.
• To gain knowledge about the basic principles of building waste water system design.
• Ability to select and evaluate the basic principles of building cold, hot and waste water system
design.
• Ability to apply design principles of building plumbing systems related to functional areas.
Object: Built environment design as the totality of active sub-systems, which perform optimally in
climate, light and health control.
Content: Heating systems and their elements, integration of these systems and their elements with
architecture, ventilation systems and their elements, climatization systems and their elements. Water
supply system of buildings and its elements, waste water system and its elements, sanitary application.
Fire control, design parameters related to built environment which are effective on fire control
(settlement density, organization of rooms, fire stairs, etc.), design of built environment as passive and
active fire safety systems.
Subject of the Study: Environmental control process for a building with given plan schemes
Steps of the Study: The control process of the physical environment consists of the steps bellow;
Determination of the U values appropriate for heat conservation and climatic comfort,
optimization for the energy need of the building
Heating – ventilating: Selection of the proper heating – ventilating system for building’s
typology, drawings showing the system’s equipment and their integration with other systems
Sanitary equipment: Selection of the proper sanitary system for building’s typology, design of
the sanitary equipment and the required spaces, their integration with other systems
