The coronavirus hit us by surprise, and consumed us within months. The guideline of
'enhanced community quarantine' includes the suspension of all mass transportation, closure
of schools and universities, checkpoints at borders, and the cancellation of domestic air, sea,
and land travel. The Philippine government has imposed a strict community quarantine order
amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. Residents, however, have concerns, as
the guidelines require that everyone should as much as possible stay at home including those
people who need to earn money by working. Here we are to discuss about the three
outcomes of this pandemic’s quarantines: the negative effects of quarantine, the positive
effects of this quarantine, and some ways to get out of this dilemma.
Millions of people’s situation in the Philippines were left confined after the
implementation of the new community quarantine order, causing chaos in the country’s
capital, Manila. Some companies have already suspended work, including non-essential
businesses that are ordered to close, and public transport that is suspended with residents who
still need to work crowding the borders in the hopes of hitching a ride to and from work.
Workers are confused and frustrated about how to earn income for their families amid the
quarantine orders including most of the drivers of public transportations. We shouldn’t just
prioritize this health crisis, but also those people like the drivers of any public transportation to
be more productive in earning money. Unlike those other companies who still pay the salary
for the workers by doing their work from home. Health care workers, government workers, and
other front liners are still required to work, facing the threat of infection and serving the country.
The crisis doesn’t stop here with these people. The COVID-19 pandemic may increase the
number of people battling acute hunger as it is said by the United Nations because of the
quarantine situation. The climate change policies are coming second as officials focus on
fighting the virus just like what happened with the latest typhoon Ulysses that unleashed
powerful winds and torrential rain that killed dozens of people, destroyed thousands of homes,
and left swathes of the island region flooded. Income losses for informal economy workers
could be “massive”, according to the International Labor Organization. Many mass
vaccination campaigns are being temporarily suspended. Also, the mental health of the
students because of the stress that they’re having with their academic performance online.
Governments shouldn’t just focus on a one topic but in all problem as it will drastically change
in a bad way.
Even though authorities will regularly and strictly check the purpose of people who go
out in the streets by ensuring the residents to stay at home, there’s still some ways to become
positive in times of ECQ, MECQ and GCQ. The government has assured that there are food
and basic supplies in the ‘Barangays’ of each local government, especially for those in dire
need during the quarantine period to ensure that all residents are safe and secure amid the
quarantine order. People seems to notice that it won’t just work in that way so the government
got another idea to ensure the safety of the people with their family. There will be only one
person is permitted by the government to go out of the household and buy essentials. Private
vehicles and motorcycles can be used, provided that only one person per vehicle. Special
permits may also be issued to vehicles to ferry employees, including health care workers,
critical personnel, and employees of private establishments. For some time, public utility
jeepneys were also assigned to transport people to buy their essentials in supermarkets and
markets in the city to reduce the people especially the drivers of any public transportations
who suffered with no earning money for their family. In all supermarkets, pharmacies, and other
essential businesses, social distancing is strictly imposed. Moreover, this quarantine helps the
people to ease their bonding with their family to be close together.
As schools, businesses, and community organizations provide services during the
pandemic, consider ways that you can protect yourself and slow the spread of COVID-19
when using transportation. The House leader said he is counting on the transportation
authorities to fully implement the mandatory wearing of face shields among the public
transport commuters amid the increasing COVID-19 cases in the country, even as he
appealed to the public to follow the norms laid down by the government to ensure public
safety. People at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and those who live with
them, should consider their level of risk before deciding to go out and ensure they are taking
steps to protect themselves. Consider avoiding activities where taking protective measures
may be difficult, such as activities where social distancing can’t be maintained. Everyone
should take steps to prevent getting and spreading COVID-19 to protect themselves, their
communities, and people who are at increased risk of severe illness. This pandemic has huge
impact. We need to convince the people to wear any protective devices whenever they go
outside to prevent the expansion of Covid-19 virus to people as we are in the most infected
by the virus all around the Asian countries. We should do what we must do to reduce the
number of cases of infection.
By being aware of the negative and positive effects of this quarantine, we can make
