ABOUT TUTORIAL
The objective of this tutorial program is to impart in depth knowledge on the importance and
testing of Distribution Transformers. The latest applicable standards, test requirements, test
methods and successful assessment criteria will be discussed. The testing & evaluation
experience of CPRI engineers with case studies will be presented during this program to
acquire and enhancing the knowledge.
As we all knew that various tests need to be carried out before Transformer is qualified for
service condition. IS 1180 Part 1 standard gives complete test requirements of distribution
Transformers. This revision scope is extended up to 2500 kVA 33 kV class Transformers.
Further, single phase distribution transformers up to 100 kVA rating have also been included.
This standard recommends multiple rating with regard to Energy Efficiency that is, three
energy efficiency levels: level 1, level 2 and level 3. It is expected that transformers shall
conform to at least energy efficiency level 1. In due course of time with improvements in
technology and materials, higher levels of energy efficient transformers shall be progressively
used. Lots of changes are in discussion stage like enhanced energy efficiency level, new norms
of CSP Transformer, necessary optional fittings etc.
TOPICS
An overview of IS and IEC standards
Importance of all Routine, Type & Special Tests
CSP Transformer requirements
Dry Type & Special Type Transformers
Technological changes and challenges relevance to Distribution Transformers
Demonstration of Short circuit test etc.

CPRI PROFILE
Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) was established by Government of India in the year
1960 with Head Quarters at Bengaluru. The main objective of the Institute is to serve as a
National laboratory for undertaking applied research in Electrical Power Engineering
besides functioning as an independent National Testing and Certification Authority for
electrical equipment and components. As a National Certification Authority, CPRI has been
serving Indian Power Sector and overseas for the last 5 decades. The Institute has several
research laboratories and testing facilities engaged in different specialized fields.
Short circuit Laboratory serving electrical Industries and utilities bytesting for more than 50
years. It has state of the art facilities to conduct testing on Low voltage switchgears and
controlgears, Distribution Transformers, Instrument transformers, Low voltage Switchgear
and Controlgear assemblies etc., CPRI is a member of STL (Short Circuit Testing Liaison), world
renowned group of International certification bodies and accredited by M/s. Intertek
(formerly known as ASTA) of UK. Our Lab is also accredited by NABL, BIS at National level.
