Techniques and Project Information

If the Loop Stitch is one that you are not familiar with, there are many wonderful tutorials on
YouTube. Just type in “Crochet Loop Stitch” into YouTube’s search box and you will find many
helpful videos.

For the purposes of this project you’ll want to make your loop stitches at least 8 inches long for the
long hair style and 5 inches long for the short hair style. Once you’ve completed a body part, open
your scissors and insert the bottom blade through the middle of each loop. Pull up with the blade so
that the loop is taught and cut the loop in half to create two pieces of hair equaling 8 or 5 inches;
depending on hair style.

When attaching a finished body part, you’ll want to pull back any surrounding loop stitches so that
they don’t get caught in your whip stitching.

Row 6: Ch 2, TW, sc next 2 sts tog, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, sc next 2 sts tog – 6 sts (head end)

Fasten off, leaving a 20” length. Stuff neck. Cut loops in half to create hair. Rotate Head so
that the Color B section of hair is at the top/center of the head. Insert back of head into head end
of Neck. See Project Photos. Row 6 of the head end of the Neck should run horizontally across
the back/center of the Head. Pull the rest of the Neck down and around the bottom of the Head.
Use 20” length to whip stitch the Neck to the Head. Tie off and weave in end.

Rotate the Body so that the Color B section of the Body is centered from side to side across the
top half of the Body. Insert the chest end of the Body into the body end of the Neck, so that Row
1 of the Neck runs horizontally across the front/center of the Body. See Project Photos. Pull the
opening of the Neck around the top/front portion of the Body and use 20” length to whip stitch
the two pieces together. Continue to stuff the Neck as you work so that it will be firm enough to
hold up the Head.

Snout
Using Color A,
Rnd 1: Ch 3, sl st last ch to first ch to create ring

Rnd 2: Ch 2, TW, work 6 loop sts in center of ring, sl st last st to first st – 6 sts

rnd, sl st last st to first st – 12 sts

Rnd 6: Ch 2, TW, * 2 loop sts in next st, 1 loop st in each of next 2 sts; rep from * 3 more times
to end of rnd, sl st last st to first st – 16 sts

The following two lines of instruction represent alternating rounds

Rnds 7,9: Ch 2, TW, 1 sc in each st to end of rnd, sl st last st to first st – 16 sts

Rnd 8: Ch 2, TW, 1 loop st in each st to end of rnd, sl st last st to first st – 16 sts

Fasten off, leaving a 12” length. Stuff snout. Use 12” length to whip stitch opening of Rnd 8 to
center of lower half of front of head. Tie off and weave in end.

Eyes, Nose and Mouth
Using two 12 inch lengths of Color C, embroider two round eyes onto the front of the head. Place
one on either side of the Snout; keeping the bottom of each eye horizontally in line with the top of
the Snout. See Project Photos.

Using an 18 inch length of Color C, embroider an upside down triangle with rounded corners to the
top/front edge of the Snout.

Using a 12 inch length of Color C, embroider a small linear mouth horizontally across the front of the
Snout, about a quarter of an inch below the bottom tip of the nose.

Ears – Make 4
Using Color B,
Row 1: (bottom) Ch 10, starting with third ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 8 chs – 8 sts

Row 2: Ch 2, TW, 1 loop st in each st to end of row – 8 sts

Row 3: Ch 2, TW, sc next 2 sts tog, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, sc next 2 sts tog – 6 sts

The following two lines of instruction represent alternating rows

Row 9: Ch 2, TW, sc next 2 sts tog, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog – 4 sts

Row 10: (top) Ch 2, TW, 1 loop st in each st to end of row – 4 sts

Fasten off, leaving a 24” length on two of the four pieces. Align one piece with and one piece
without the 24” length so that the tops and shapes of each piece match. Keep the loop stitches facing
outward on both pieces. Use 24” length to whip stitch the edges of the two pieces together around
the entire perimeter of the ear. Cut loop stitches in half to create hair. Repeat process for remaining
two pieces. Align the top row of each completed ear horizontally along the top/side of each side of
the head. See Project Photos. Use remainder of 24” length to whip stitch the top row of each ear to
the head. Tie off and weave in ends.

Front Legs – Make 2

Using Color A and leaving a 12” length,
Rnd 1: (ankle) Ch 12, sl st last ch to first ch to make rnd – 12 chs

Begin working in rows

Row 1: Ch 2, TW, 1 loop st in each of next 7 sts – 7 sts

Row 2: Ch 2, TW, 1 sc in each st to end of row – 7 sts

Row 3: Ch 2, TW, loop st next 2 sts tog, 1 loop st in each of next 3 sts, loop st next 2 sts tog – 5
sts

Row 4: (hip) Ch 2, TW, sc next 2 sts tog, 1 sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog – 3 sts

Grooming Your Dog

As you can see on the first page of this pattern and in the Project Photos, I have groomed this
dog with both a long and short hair style. To achieve these, you first need to brush the hair out
smooth. A photo of the brush I used is provided in the Project Photos. If done correctly, this
will take some time. You do not need to be super gentle while brushing. Make sure that you
brush as close to the “root” of the hair as possible. You will notice that as you brush, chunks of
yarn with come off onto your brush. I like to save this as stuffing for future projects.

The long hair style is very simple. After you have brushed out the hair, swoop the hair from
around the eyes and the top of the head up into a pony tail. Fasten a butterfly clip or an elastic
band around the base of the pony tail to keep it in place. Then, take the hair from both sides of
the snout and pull it straight down. Cut the mustache so that both sides are even. See Project
Photos. Brush the tail hair down towards the dogs back and smooth it down along one side of its
body. That’s pretty much it for the long hair look.

The short hair style is a little more time consuming. First, you have to decide how long you want
the hair to be. Pull a layer of hair on the body between your fingers and cut it to the length that
you want. Then you basically, you just need to do that same exact process for the rest of the
hair. The shorter you cut the hair the scruffier your dog will look. For the dog I show in the
project photos, I cut all of the body and leg hair to approximately two inches long. I cut the face
a little shorter, to about one and a half inches long. For the ears, I let the hair hang down two
inches past the end of the actual ear and cut it even, horizontally. Then you just cut the hair at
the bottom of the leg even with the bottom of the foot, and you are done.

There are plenty more hair styles, if you do not like the ones shown. Search images of Shih
Tzu’s on the internet and you will find tons of inspiration. Have fun with it!
