 MAIN PRODUCTS
The main products of Pora, CPC and EPC for steel products, hydraulic servo system, plate detection, stagger
control system, dither system, ultrasonic wave sensor, Infrared sensor and air sensor, are all automatic control
products exclusively based on the technical capability of Pora itself which is acknowledged by the world and
provide a convenient working environment. These products are widely used in each manufacturing field such
as the steel industry, light metal industry and printing industry (bookbinding industry, plastic industry, film
industry, rubber industry, chemical industry, paper industry and textile industry) and can be simply installed in
the newly constructed line or an existing line. These products will help to reduce production expenses and
labor by arranging works such as the surface treatment of strips, lamination, marking and cutting to be done
without waste at the position desired.

 GUIDE DESIGN
ㆍPayoff reel
The Payoff reel method is used to evenly align the edge or center position when a coil which is in the telescope state
(coil wound in the shape of stairs) or irregularly wound is fed to the next process. (The entire reel is controlled by a hydraulic
power unit by fixing the sensor.) In this case, an important thing is to install the sensor as closely as possible to the Payoff
reel so that the stability of the control device can solely depend on the control device itself.
Also, if the width of the strip is irregular or there is necessity to accurately control the center, the strip center control method
using a CPC sensor is also used and being applied to the Payoff reel.

Distance between uncoiler and pinch roll Caution If starting point calibration control rotation is required,
the sensor should be installed away from the pinch roll.

ㆍTension reel
The sensor moves fixed to the tension reel(recoiler). It is desirable to install the sensor nearby but higher than the tension
reel. (An angle should be maintained.) When planning to install an EPC device, whatever method is selected, it is ideal to
reduce the scope of control and the system requires considerations in order to be adequate for the scope. Also, as there
is a constraint such as contortion of the strip depending on the handling of the reel at the execution surface (the side the
sensor detects), an appropriate method should be selected upon fully considering the nature of the strip and status of the
tension reel.

Maintain the distance as close as possible.

The nearer it is, the better the effect it brings.

EPC Sensor

Increase of Q is required in accordance with the corresponding condition:
Q = Maintain the 15°
angle or higher - If the distance between the support roll and recoiler is short.
- If the surface of the strip is oil or wax treated.
- If the roll too thick or too heavy is used.
- If tension is small or there is a phenomenon of bouncing.

- If the error of the strip entering the EPC is substantial.

Coil(Strip)

It is not good if it is too short in comparison to the maximum width of the strip.
※ A minimum angle of Q is basically required to prevent sliding of the strip.

ㆍIntermediate Guide roll
If it is needed to adjust strip’s edge or central position in the middle of process, a steering roll should be installed on the
existing equipment. The Steering roll method is mainly divided into the center pivot method and end pivot method. The
center pivot method is of a structure using the center of the strip plane as the center of rotation.

End pivot steering roll method

It is a method to send the strip and simultaneously change the proceeding direction of the strip to the same direction as the
structure shown in the figure below.
It is widely used as it does not need two idler rolls nor occupy much space, and the structure is simple when compared to
the center pivot method.

Center pivot steering roll method

There is almost no slip when the steering roll moves as the strip is wrapped 180°around the steering roll and, if there is
any slip, it can be solved by using a roll with a high friction coefficient when the strip moves together with the steering roll as one.
‘Amount moved (amount corrected) = roll diameter x tanθ’ The limit of the error of θis ±5°, and if the free path part
from the steering roll to the upstream/downstream idler roll is maintained at twice the width of the strip or wider, almost no
wrinkle generation problem will occur.

Examples of EPC system operation

for the Steel Industry

Unwinding

When it is required to feed the material which is unevenly wound to the

next process (for example, slitter), an EPC sensor is installed at the fixed
position desired and the system controls the material by moving the roller
left or right using the cylinder so that one edge of the material is always
at a fixed position.
(The sensor should be attached separately from the payoff reel.)

Rewinding

It is used to rewind a coil with the edges evenly aligned. The EPC sensor
shall be installed at the fixed position desired after installed the sensor
to match the rewinding roller, and the system controls the material by
moving the roller left or right using the cylinder in order to rewind the
material with the edge evenly aligned.
(Both ARM TYPE and ARM LESS are possible.)

Edge Position Control System

Overview of EPC
Progress of the light or ultrasonic wave is blocked by the edges parts of the material, when the position of
the material is detected through change in the received signal and ± voltage is supplied to the moving coil
by amplifying the received signal. The voltage supplied to the moving coil is converted into mechanical force
which moves the spool, and directs the edge of the material to be at the center of the detection sensors by
adjusting the guide left or right through the cylinder using the hydraulic power pumped by a hydraulic pump.

Examples of Guide Roller Installation

The end pivot type is divided into the single type which has one roller and the double type which has two rollers. One of these
two types is selected depending on the line. It is used only when the material to be handled has elasticity and can also easily
absorb the change in tension of both edges of the material. The capability of installing it in the middle of the line with relative
ease is an added advantage.

* The angle at which the material is bent on the guide roller is essentially 90°and if there is no slipping phenomenon between the
roller and the material, the angle may be slightly adjusted.

Overview of the Tension Controller
In order to achieve high speed or high performance of the rewinder or unwinder of sheet materials such as paper, thread, wire,
various sheets and tapes, material tension control is important. It can be installed to the existing facility without changing the
structure and save production cost and labor by controlling the production line using the tension controller.

Characteristics of Tension Controller

Powder Brake and Powder Clutch

Characteristics of Powder Brakes and Powder Clutches
❶ Highly precise wide-range control
The torque can be adjusted to fit the capacity in order to achieve wide-range control as the response is quick and accurate with the super-
fine processing, and the transferred torque varies.

❷ Low maintenance expenses

Its long life is guaranteed as it has superior resistance to heat, oxidation, corrosion and friction being composed of spherical particles
of Fe, Al and Cr alloy, and it can be used for a long period of time without adding grease by applying the rubber cover type bearing.

❸ Stability
The material and production lines are protected as the torque needed to maintain adequate tension is transferred to the output shaft
irrespective of the torque of the input shaft.

❹ High reliability
It can be safely operated for a long time without an operator as the torque transferred to the output shaft can be constantly maintained
and the voltage can be adjusted at all time in any circumstances.

❺ Automation

❻ Shock absorbing property

Though, in case of a general electronic clutch or brake, shock is applied to the device as torque is momentarily transferred when the
power is transferred, a powder brake or clutch induces generation of a slip to smoothly transfer the power which gives no burden to the
device at all.

Operation Principle of Powder Brakes and Powder Clutches

The magnetic flux generated by applying current to the coil makes powders connect with each other in the shape of a chain. At this
time, power is transferred by the connection force between the powders and friction force between the planes of motion.

When current is cut off : Power is not transferred because electric current does not flow through coil.

When current is applied : Power is transferred by magnetic force when the current is applied to the coil. If the current increases or
decreases, the cohesion of powders also increases or decreases, and power will be changed as well.

Application
The powder clutch and powder brake with exceptionally superior tension control can be widely used for industrial machines as they are
easy to mount and 100% conforms to international standards.
Example) It is widely used to control rewinding and unwinding tensions of industrial machines such as the resin machine, paper-making
machine, spinning machine, wire-making machine and food machine.

Cautions to Take Before Use

❶ Do not allow any substances like moisture or oil inside the system as the powder clutch or the powder brake is operated using powder.
❷ Do not apply any external shock as the powder brake or powder clutch is operated with concentricity. (Tir is 0.15.)

❸ Do not allow any moisture or water inside the enamel coil or terminal box.
❹ The tolerances of the outer diameter of the shaft and inner diameter of the shaft housing are h6 for size Φ48 or smaller and m6 for
size Φ55 or larger. Match the outer diameter of the shaft and inner diameter of the shaft housing accordingly.
❺ Match the verticality between the shaft of the powder brake or the powder clutch and the bracket within Tir 0.15.
❻ The tolerance for concentricity of shafts is Tir 0.15.
❼ Maintain balance of the machine as there is a risk of hunting or malfunctioning.

Cautions to Take While in Use

❶ Put powder in if a malfunction occurs due to the abrasion of powder while in use.
❷ Inspect the bearings regularly as hunting (malfunction) may occur due to the abrasion of the bearing.
❸ Maintain the operating temperature at 85℃.
❹ Do not excessively extend the lead wire.
❺ When the powder has been used for more than 2 years, normal operation can be achieved only when at least 1.2 times the specified
quantity of powder is put in.
