Visiting Colombia: What is a stereotype? What kinds of stereotypes do you think

travelers have about Colombia? Do those stereotypes represent
What to Expect on the reality of life here? Do stereotypes affect tourism? How?
Your First Travel Have you ever considered other people’s opinions to decide on
visiting a country?
Read and discuss this excerpt from a traveler’s blog. What do
the words and phrases in bold mean?
So you’re planning your first visit to Colombia, and you don’t know what to ex-
pect? Despite the stereotypical misrepresentations of a country, which has been
historically portrayed in media as a very violent place-to-be, there are numer-
ous reasons that make this country a great destination for any world traveler;
therefore, you can’t base your desicion only on stereotypes.
Unlike many other countriers, you are allowed to enter the country without
a visa. However, you must have a passport, which is the only legally accepted
identification for tourists in the country, and you are supposed to carry it with
you at all times during your stay. Depending on the places you decide to visit,
there is a great variety of activities that will keep you busy and entertained.

Certainly, transportation will not be a problem: Every city has a good offer of vehicles to
move around, but if you feel more comfortable driving one yourself, you can also rent a car.
As long as you have a valid driver’s license from your country of origin, you don’t need to
have one issued in Colombia. Whether you like adventure, urban life, nightlife or historic
touring, there will be something to satisfy your expectations in every city you visit, and you
could find some tour plans online that might help you save some money and time. Howev-
er, you should learn about the customs, culture, and do’s or don’ts in the cities you intend
to visit ahead of time to avoid encountering difficulties. One thing is for sure, though: You
shouldn’t leave South America without making a stop in Colombia: the doorway to a conti-
nent where you will surely have the most memorable traveling experiences.
