Locomotor Skills
These are movements that allow us to move from one point in space to another. It is comes from two
words “locos” which means place, and “motor” which means movement.  This may mean moving forward,
backward, or even upwards using certain skills. They include the following:
Locomotor Skill How it is done
Step The transfer of weight from one to another.

Manipulative Skills
These are skills developed when handling an object. Most of these skills involve the hands and feet but
other parts of the body can also be used like kicking, catching and throwing, etc.
C. Readings:
The Importance of Movement
From the time of our birth, we are discovering how to move about in the world. An infant learns to
2
pick up Cheerios with an index finger and thumb, a toddler masters using a spoon to eat cereal, and a child
works on the complex coordination required to use chopsticks. Now, these eating activities may seem trivial,
but this evolution of motion is essential to our success as an individual..The core of human activity can be
reduced to several fundamental movements, known as locomotor and non-locomotor skills. These skills are
often taught either through play or formal physical education classes.
Manipulative skills are used efficiently in physical education to attain expertise in a particular
activity. Here, learners perform basic manipulation skills in order to build endurance and flexibility, along
with accuracy and relevant force . As a result, they develop physical fitness along with durability.
You will be given activities to display and enhance your skills in festival dancing at the same time
formulate your understandings on the benefits of such activities to your fitness and wellbeing. As you go on
and overcome the challenges provided for you, you will learn that together, festival dancing activities will be
more fun and exciting, without knowing that you are at the same time improving your fitness and your sense
of community.
