We welcome you to Diploma in TEFL course “Psycholinguistics and Language
Teaching Methodology, Code 5655”. This course intends to acquaint you with the latest
trends and strategies in teaching of English.
You have to submit two assignments for this course. The first assignment is theory based;
whereas, the second assignment is a research based project.
NOTE: Remember that it is compulsory to attend at least 7 classes out of the total 10
classes. Similarly, you are required to pass both components: the written report as well
as presentation of the second assignment. Failing to attend the required number of
classes and pass/complete either of the components of 2 nd assignment, you will be
declared fail even if you have passed the final written examination.

ASSIGNMENT No. 1
Q.1 What do you understand by the term theory? What are the different theories about
language learning? Explain these theories in detail. (20)
Q.2 What are the basic characteristics of language? Is there any difference between
communicative and non-communicative use of language? If yes, describe the
differences in detail. (20)
Q.3 Briefly discuss some of the methods that can be used in teaching and learning
English in the language classroom? What method do you think is most appropriate
in teaching speaking skills to EFL learners? (20)
Q.4 What is the importance of reading skills in the EFL classroom? Plan a lesson based
on reading skills for secondary school students learning English. Also, plan at least
three activities for each stage (presentation, practice and production) of your lesson
plan. (10+10)
Q.5 What is classroom management? Explain in detail the activities you will conduct in
an EFL/ESL class to manage a large class of seventy students. (10)
Q.6 What role does a teacher play in successful learning of a second language? Is there
any difference between first language acquisition and second language learning?
Discuss by giving suitable examples. (10)

ASSIGNMENT No. 2
(Project)
Total Marks: 100 Pass Marks: 40
This assignment is based on a research oriented activity. You are required to carry out the
research and prepare a brief report on your findings in any one of the areas given below.
You will submit the report to the tutor within the scheduled period, present the same in
the course/assignment presentation workshop (the schedule of the course/assignment
presentation workshop will be intimated by the tutor concerned or the Regional Office).
The compulsory presentation carries 100 marks; 40 marks for the written
report/assignment and 60 for the presentation.
Select any one of the following topics for research.
1. “Analyzing the effectiveness of the application of Direct Method in Teaching
English as a Second Language at Elementary Level.” Design a questionnaire (10-
15 questions) for teachers to investigate into effective use of Direct Method for
improving integrated skills of the students. Select 10 teachers from different
institutions as population. Attach all questionnaires with your assignment. Discuss
and analyze the responses statistically.
2. What is the difference between trained English language teachers and untrained
English language teachers? Observe two trained teachers (experienced teachers)
and two untrained teachers (newly appointed teachers) of secondary level in their
English language class room for a week and note down in your research diary or
observation sheet:
a. What difference or similarity is present in their methodology of teaching?
b. Their confidence level.
c. Their creativity in planning activities.
d. Their interaction with students e.g. handling student’s queries regarding the lesson.
e. Who is better than whom and in what ways?
Write a report based on your observations. The report should include the name of
teachers (optional), their institutes, their qualifications and most importantly your
analysis, discussion and conclusion about the above mentioned points.
3. In Pakistan, English language course books at Intermediate level do not have
enough activities to practice listening skills. How far this statement is correct? Take
an English language course book of Intermediate level, analyze it and write a report
whether the statement above is correct or wrong. Your report must include:
a. All the skills which can be practiced through that course book (attach the
course contents of that book with your project).
b. Give reasons from the book (using content analysis research design) to claim
the correctness of the statement or otherwise.
c. Suggest some reasons as recommendations to ensure the practice of listening
skills in the course book.
Note: Please take help from libraries, internet and books while writing your project
report.
