Course: Modern Grammatical Theory (5668) Semester: Autumn, 2024


Level: MA TEFL
Please read the following instructions for writing your assignments. (AD, BS, BEd,
MA/MSc, MEd) (ODL Mode).
1. All questions are compulsory and carry equal marks but within a question the
marks are distributed according to its requirements.
2. Read the question carefully and then answer it according to the requirements of the
questions.
3. Avoid irrelevant discussion/information and reproducing from books, study guide
or allied material.
4. Handwritten scanned assignments are not acceptable.
5. Upload your typed (in Word or PDF format) assignments on or before the due date.
6. Your own analysis and synthesis will be appreciated.
7. Late assignments can’t be uploaded at LMS.
8. The students who attempt their assignments in Urdu/Arabic may upload a scanned
copy of their handwritten assignments (in PDF format) on University LMS. The
size of the file should not exceed 5MP.

ASSIGNMENT No. 1
Q.1 Write a comprehensive note on symbols used in writing rules for syntactic analysis.
Take 10 sentences from any English news paper and analyze the structure of theses
sentences by using theses symbols. (20)

Q.2 Explain how phrase structure rules generate the base component. Explain phrase
structure rules with reference to surface and deep structures. (20)

Q.3 Tree diagram is a convenient way of showing how different constituents are
arranged in a sentence. Elaborate this statement with the help of ten example
sentences for any novel. (20)

Q.4 How is language acquisition described by Noam Chomsky. Write a comprehensive
note on all the ideas related to language acquisition that were presented by
Chomsky. (20)

Q.5 How can the principles of Universal Grammar be used in practical teaching of
language learning. Justify your response with suitable examples. (20)

ASSIGNMENT No. 2
The second assignment is a project. You are required to study the relevant area, conduct
your research and prepare a report on your findings as per given insinctions. You will
have to submit one copy of the report to your tutor within the scheduled time period and
then present the report in the tutorials. This compulsory assignment carries 100 marks, 40
marks for the written report (assignment) and 60 for the presentation. You are required to
pass both these parts separately.

A few guidelines for the presentation and the written report

i. The written report should have an introduction, body and conclusion. It should be
written in clear, concise and correct English.
ii. It should have 2000 to 3000 words.
iii. The presentation will be assessed and evaluated mainly in:
Contents of the assignment/report
b. Communication skills
c. Language fluency
d. Presentation style

iv. You may use transparencies, charts or any other material to make your presentation
impressive.
You will prepare your project on ONE of the following topics. Your tutor will assign
different topics to different students during your classes.

1. Transformations of English language have been presented in detail in the course


book. Similarly, make a list of transformation processes on data from your mother
tongue with examples. Then draft a report on comparison of transformations in
English and your mother tongue.

2. Using cross sectional method, collect language data from three learners: one in the
age of 3-4 years, another in age of 5-7 years and last in age 8-10 years. Analyze
their language learning process form the perspectives of different language learning
theories that you studied in the book.
