1997

A couple of new formats helped Lowville gain accolades in 1997. State

competition had been divided into class A, B, and C competition in 1996, and the
Frontier League reorganized into Northern and Southern divisions.
We had a slow start as a team in 1997. Of the eight teams attending the League
Relays, we finished tied for sixth. We lost a close meet against Watertown in our first
league dual meet. From that point our fortunes improved. We won seven out of our next
eight contests, five of them by fewer than ten points. Despite suffering two losses, we
had the best record among the Southern Division teams for our first division
championship.
At the RMI meet, we brought home the first place trophy for the fourth time,
despite winning only two events. Kristin Weller won the blue in the pentathlon, and the
4x400 relay team of Tanya Roes, Kate Steria, Sarah Herr, and Emily McAuliffe won as
well.
Two school records were set at the Liverpool Invitational. Sarah Herr inproved
the Javelin record to 74’ 7,” and Becky Dunckel bested her own record in the shot put by
two inches. Later in the season she would set the record for good at the league
tournament.
Junior Emily McAuliffe had a great day at the Class C1 meet at Ilion. Emily
placed first in the 100 meter dash and first in the triple jump.
Freshman Anna Doroghazi had been reliable as a discus thrower throughout the
season, hitting 80 feet regularly. I hadn’t paid much attention to her, since she had been
doing so well, but after a disappointing performance at the league tournament, I had her
throw for me. What I saw was amazing. Anna was throwing the discus 80 feet with the
disc spinning off the back of her hand. We corrected her technique with 30 minutes of
work, and she was rewarded with a throw of 98’3” at sectionals, and a school record toss
of 105’4” at the open qualifier.
Becky Dunckel capped her career with a great senior season. She had been
robbed of an opportunity to compete at the Open Qualifier in 1996, so she was all the
more hungry to make up for it this season. Becky dominated the pentathlon at league
tournament, sectionals, and the class C division of the Open State Qualifier to earn her
berth at States. She made the trip worthwhile by finishing third and winning a bronze
medal in the class C division.
