Modular Learning’s Impact on Elementary Pupil Performance in the San Jose
Elementary School Amidst Pandemic
Rationale
The spread of Covid19 brought prompt changes to the Philippines, especially in its
educational system. Schools all over the Philippines may it be public or private and
including Elementary Grades were immediately banned from participation, transactions,
and curricular activities after the president ordered the suspension of face-to-face
teaching under Health Department recommendation that the Philippines placed under
extended community quarantine.
The Ministry of Education had to convert and design a realistic learning platform without
affecting its goal of providing its learners with high-quality, continuous learning and
promoting health awareness. Regardless of the said pandemic, the DepEd maintains its
commitment to come up with quality education to all Filipinos and makes education
accessible to all. Since Filipinos are tough and resilient to all setbacks, the learners
especially the young ones in Elementary Grades seem to have been able to cope with
all sorts of conventional changes.
The sudden transition of the traditional to the new normal in the teaching and learning
process, the DepEd offered learning modality, which is Blended Learning. According to
Llego (2020 ), blended learning is a combination of face-to-face with any or a
combination of online distance learning, modular learning. On the other hand, the online
distance learning modality refers to a learning in which occurs between the teacher and
the students who are distant from each other during the teaching-learning process.
The success and effectiveness of distance learning depend on the study materials
Jayaram and Dorababu (2020). Therefore, in order to meet the needs and abilities of
each student, DepEd has focused on self-study modules as the main learning tool that
can be used by all students and that can be combined with other modes of instruction to
which students have access. According to (Nardo, M.T.B, 2017) using modules
advocates self-directed learning. Using Modules to Learn will result in better self-paced
study or better study skills. The concepts presented in modules engage students in their
learning. The proposed tasks promote students' sense of responsibility and progress on
their own. You learn to learn; they are empowered.
Additionally, all students participate in real-life experiences. They discover new things
and experience their own knowledge. Students learn to reflect on their own experiences
and thus develop new skills learning through direct modular students to be responsible
for their own learning. However, the use of modules also has its drawbacks. According
to Brijesh (2017), the chances of being distracted and losing track of deadlines without
the presence of teachers and their classmates reminding them of their assignments are
high. Students had difficulties to solve their tasks in their modules and the lack of
knowledge of parents to instruct their children academically. With all the pros and cons
of using modular learning as a learning modality, the purpose of this action research is to
find out if module learning instructional approaches further improve the pupils
understanding of the content within each subject or learning area under knowledge,
skills, values and attitudes, that are expected to be learned and expand pupil’s
engagement in San Jose Elementary School.
