Extinction in biology is the dying out or termination of species. Extinction occurs when
species are diminished because of environmental forces (habitat fragmentation, global change,
overexploitation of species for human use) or because of evolutionary changes in their members
(genetic inbreeding, poor reproduction, decline in population numbers). Biodiversity is
everywhere, both on land and in water. It includes all organisms from microscopic bacteria to
more complex plants and animals. The current loss of biodiversity and the changes in the
environment are now faster than ever before in human history. Many animal and plant
populations have declined in numbers. Species extinction is a natural part of Earth’s history.
Human activity has increased the extinction rate by at least 100 times compared to the natural
rate.
