What is the difference?
Can /can’t =
The verb can is a modal verb that we use to talk about something, and someone has the
ability to do something for example,
He can play
while the verb can't is simply the opposite, we use it to talk about something and someone
who does not have the ability to do something for example,
He can't play
+ I can play the guitar
- I can’t play the guitar
? Can you play the guitar?
Yes, I can
No, I can’t
? What can you play?
I can play soccer
could /couldn’t =
Could is the past of CAN and is used to speak of ability in the past. The two verbs are also
used to ask for things or to ask someone to do something.
Couldn't is the abbreviation of could not which would be the refusal of could
+ I could do my homework last night
