Blackjack Strategy & Tips Guide

Blackjack has been one of the most popular casino games for decades due to favorable odds for players. Basic strategy involves understanding when to hit, stand, split, or double down based on one's hand and the dealer's upcard to improve chances of winning. New players are advised to sit closer to third base to have more time to decide their next move since first base must act first after receiving their initial cards.

Blackjack has been probably the most popular table game for the past four

decades. Blackjack is such a popular casino game because of the odds it

offers the odds are only 3% in favour of the house and certain strategies
have been known to take this favour down to as low as 0.5%. This means
that player’s decisions and skill during the game can change the outcome in
their favour.

The lay out of a Blackjack table is typical to the one shown below.

The seat furthest to the right is called first base and the seat furthest to the
left is called third base. First base is where the dealer deals to first so
whoever is sitting there gets to make the first decision, this is alright if you
are an experienced player but if you are just learning you would be better
sitting closer to third base so you have time to think about your next move.

Before the cards are dealt the player or players must place their bets in the
betting area .in front of where they are seated this is usually marked via a
circle which usually has the casino log in it.

When all bets are placed the dealer will deal everybody two cards face up
and themselves two cards but with one face up and one face down.

If the dealer’s first card is an ace he will ask you if you wish to take out
insurance. This is a side bet of half of the players original bet, that the
dealers card facing down is a 10 this would make Blackjack. But if the
dealers hand does not make Blackjack then the game will continue as
normal and all insurance bets will lose. If the dealer does have Blackjack the
insurance bets payout 2-1 meaning you get your original stake back.
However all the original hands will lose unless another player also has
Blackjack and this is called a push meaning a draw. So really guessing that a
dealer has Blackjack is just a chance to break even if he does, instead of
losing your bet.
So although this may sound like a good idea insurance bets mathematically
lose more than they win so in my opinion it is best not to take insurance
bets.

If a player has Blackjack and the dealer does not then he will win and be
paid winnings of 3-2 immediately. If there are any other players the game
will then continue, and the dealer will ask the first person to her left not to
have blackjack if they would like another card. You may continue to draw
more cards you will go bust and automatically lose if your hand goes over
21. When you are happy with the amount your cards add up to you must
stand and then the dealer will move onto the next player. After all players
have drawn their cards and either stood or gone bust the dealer will turn
over their down faced card and then draw until their total is 17 or higher.
This means the dealer will always draw on a hand 16 or lower but always
stands on a hand 17 or higher.

If the dealers hand is equals 17-21 you will lose if your hand is not as high
as theirs and the dealer will take your chips, if your hand is higher the dealer
will pay you evens, the dealer will also lose if they draw higher than 21 and
go bust and you will also be paid evens. If your total equals the dealers the
game is a push (draw) and you receive back your original bet.

Right so it may seem that in Blackjack that there are a great deal of
decisions to be made, should I stand? Should I draw? Should I split? Should
I insure? Well one of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to blackjack
is to always try and get your total as close to 21 as possible, this is not the
case and although a 18-21 hand is a strong one, this is not what you should
always aim for as depending on thecards you are holding and the dealers
face up card, there is only one statistically correct decision to make. We will
discuss them below and show you the basic strategy used by the experts.
First here are some pointers you should always remember
when playing Blackjack:

1 The dealer must continue to take cards until they reach 17 or more.
2 Once the dealer gets to 17 or more they must stop, irrespective of the
hand that the player has.
3 Blackjack is achieved with an ace and a ten-value card (this includes the
Jack, Queen and King).
4 Whilst other winning hands pay "even money" (i.e. you win whatever your
stake was), Blackjack pays 3 to 2 (i.e. you win three chips for every two
you have staked).
5 Aces are worth either 1 or 11.
6 Ten-value cards are the most common (remember all picture cards are
worth 10).
7 You may double your stake if your first two cards total 9, 10 or 11 (called
"double down"). This can be worthwhile if you believe you are likely to be
dealt a 10 next (and thus getting to 19, 20 or 21) but keep an eye on the
dealer's card too! If your hand includes an ace you cannot double. Note
also that if you choose to double, you will only receive one card.
8 If you are dealt two cards of the same value (although picture cards must
match), you can choose to split them. This in effect doubles your stake
and thus your opportunity to win, but again keep an eye on the dealer's
card before splitting.
9 If the dealer's first card is an ace, you will be given the option of placing a
side bet. This is called Insurance. When the dealer has an ace, he is
considered to have a good chance of getting Blackjack. If the dealer does
get Blackjack, this Insurance pays 2 to 1. If you do buy Insurance and the
dealer fails to get Blackjack you lose your Insurance. Insurance bets are
always half the value of your initial stake.
10 You play at your own pace. Don't worry if you need to consider for a while
whether to "hit" or "stand", you can play the game in your own time.
Below you will find a table containing the basic strategy, this table has been
devloped by experts of the game and mathematicians as a basic strategy
guide to increase your chances of winning. The value of your hand is in the
left hand column, and the dealer’s is on the top right row.
