TITLE :
Aid to diagnosis of a Motorised Butterfly control unit, petrol injection Valeo and Sagem.
CONCERNING :
CITROËN vehicles with petrol injection engine ECUs : Valeo and Sagem (J34P and
S2000 PM1 PM2) on engines TU1A, TU3A, TU3JP and EW7J4.
INCIDENT :
It has been observed that the Motorised Butterfly control unit is often replaced for no
justifiable reason.
REMEDY :
Before taking the decison to replace a Motorised Butterfly control unit, please
systematically apply the following procedure.
Necessary tooling :
• Lexia/Proxia diagnostic tool
• The adaptor harness for the injection ECU.

REMINDERS :

Page 1 / 8
• In disconnecting the Motorised Butterfly control unit, it is absolutely prohibited to
apply an anti-grip spray as this would pollute the wiring.
• It is absolutely prohibited to insert tools into the contacts.

Stage 1
Perform a reading of faults using the diagnostic Stage 2
tool. Is there a fault in relation to the Motorised End of
Butterfly control unit ? procedure
List of the faults concerned : Replacement
P0121-P0123, P1152, P1153, P1157, P1158, of the

unit prohibited.

Yes

Stage 3
Is the battery voltage fault present ?

Yes

No
Stage 4
End of procedure
Deal first with this fault.

Stage 5
Go to stage 11
Is the ECU a J34P ?
No

Yes

Stage 6
Do not disconnect anything.
Via the diagnostic tool, perform an
Go to stage
actuator test on the M.B. control unit.
11
Check that the M.B. control unit moves
(slight clicking). No
Is the result of the test correct ?

Yes

Go to stage 7

Stage 7
Via the diagnostic tool, perform the
actuator test again on the M.B. control unit.
During the test, shake the harness
m oderately (2 to 3 up-and-downs per No
second), holding the harness less than 10
cm away from the connector of the
Motorised Butterfly control unit, without
pulling on the wiring.
Check that the M.B. control unit moves
(slight clicking). Stage 8
Yes
Did the actuator test go correctly ? End of procedure
Repair the harness or
the connector. For
greater precision,
Yes perform a reading of
faults in order to identify
the m alfunction.
Stage 9
Perform the actuator test a third time on the
Motorised Butterfly control unit. During the
test, shake the harness m oderately (2 to 3 No
up-and-downs per second), holding the
harness less than 10 cm away from the ECU
connector, without pulling on the wiring.
Check that the M.B. control unit moves
(slight clicking).
Did the actuator test go correctly ? Stage 10
End of procedure
Repair the harness or
the connector. For
Yes greater precision,
perform a reading of
faults in order to identify
the m alfunction.
Stage 11
Check the following points :
- The connector should be correctly locked
on the Motorised Butterfly control unit.
- The supply harness should be correctly
secured : as in the diagram s below.
