LA Standard 2-b

The document discusses Language Arts Standard 2, which states that teachers should model effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in all instructional activities. As the most important communicator in the classroom, the teacher must demonstrate English language arts skills. The respondent explains their understanding of the standard, providing an example lesson on verbs that models the key skills. Their teaching will change to further meet the standard by being more conscious of modeling literacy skills and allowing students to role play using proper and improper skills. As a result of meeting this standard, the respondent feels more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse society by ensuring students can present themselves effectively while maintaining their own language and culture.

LANGUAGE ARTS STANDARD 2 – All teachers should model effective reading, writing,

speaking, and listening skills during their direct and indirect instructional activities. The

most important communicator in the classroom is the teacher, who should model

English language arts skills.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

As teachers we give students textbooks, lessons, worksheets, anything to master the skills

of the English language. However, we neglect to realize that the biggest manipulative we have is

ourselves. For our students to understand proper reading, writing, speaking and listening skills

we need to be modeling them and using them accordingly every day. Students should see a

teacher doing all of these skills daily to better their understanding and knowledge of how the

English language works.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The lesson I chose was a fifth grade grammar lesson on verbs. The lesson’s focus is on

finding verbs in sentences and how to correctly put verbs in sentences. The students are exposed

to the teacher reading sentences from the text out loud, writing sentences on the board, and

listening to students create sentences. All of the skills we teachers need to demonstrate are

shown in this lesson. Instead of giving the students problems to do and reading straight from the

book, this allows the students to understand how the sentences should be said and how they

should write them.

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

The artifact was used in practice and I do feel that modeling all of the English language

skills is important to a student’s education. I have seen it be more effective and meaningful in

the lower grades, however students in the upper grades need it too. If the teacher is leading by

example, the students will catch on and pick up the skills on their own. My teaching will change

because I will be conscience about making sure I am modeling all of these skills for my students

so they can get more out of what I am teaching. I will allow my students to role play and use

proper and improper literacy skills. This is will give them a hands on experience of how it should

and shouldn’t sound.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

In our society today, there is increasingly more diversity in the way the English language

is used. Every student is exposed to something different whether it is a dialect, second language,

short-hand, or texting lingo. I want to make sure the students keep that language because it is

important to them and who they are. However, students need to know how to present themselves

in school or social setting. They need to know what it is to read, write, and speak effectively. I

want my students to succeed, providing them these tools will help them with finding jobs, getting

into college, and so on.
