Standard 2

The document discusses Standard 2 for teachers, which states that teachers should understand how students grow and develop individually and provide learning opportunities that support students' intellectual, social, and personal growth. The summary discusses how a worksheet was created to help students struggling with sentence writing by allowing them to plan their sentences first before writing them. Using this artifact showed the teacher that small modifications can help students. The teacher realized they need to be prepared to support all students in different ways and be ready to modify lessons as needed to help students from diverse backgrounds and with different needs.

STANDARD 2 – Human Development and learning: The teacher understands how

individuals grow, develop, and learn and provides learning opportunities that support the

intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

All students grow and learn at different rates both physically and mentally. For this fact,

teachers need to be prepared for all types of students and their specific needs. Teachers need to

come up with ways to challenge the students who are advanced while supporting those who need

the extra help. It is a balancing act, learning how to accommodate and ensure that all students

grow and develop. Besides the original planning, teachers need to dig deeper into the needs of

specific students and bring about all opportunities for them to learn best.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The artifact I chose is a worksheet I created for my students who struggle with their

sentence writing. There were a select few students who were unable to get clear thoughts on

paper, who were unable to get their sentences to make sense or stay on topic, as well as some

students who just couldn’t get the sentences written down. The worksheet allows the students to

write their first sentence and jot down the ideas of what they want to write in the other sentences.

This helps the student stay organized and focus on their writing instead of what to write about. It

gives them the opportunity to have the plan laid out and just follow it even if they forget or get

sidetracked. It gives these particular students a chance to provide the sentences they are capable

of but were having a hard time getting out onto the paper.
3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

The artifact has been used successfully in practice and will continue to be used. My

teaching will change in the future based on the little change I made to a worksheet that has

helped students a lot. It helps to know that something so small can make such an impact on

student work. This means for future activities or lessons, if students are having difficulty I can

look at what they are trying to do, what they are having trouble with and make a subtle change to

help them. It didn’t take a lot of extra effort so it can be done to any lesson and help each

student who needs it.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

I am more prepared for teaching in a diverse society because of the changes I have seen

since using this artifact. I have realized how much trouble some students have with simple tasks

and how easy it is for me to modify what they are doing for them. Students just learning English

for the first time are going to have a hard time and need modifications and help to get them

through. A student’s background or family history also contributes to their development which

means those students will need extra support as well. It doesn’t matter the students race,

ethnicity or background they will all need help at some point and it is my job as the teacher to

give them the best opportunity to succeed.
