Military designation
USAAF/USAF Pursuit/Fighter Designation
The fighter designation changed from “P” for Pursuit to “F” for Fighter in June 1948, the XP-86, P-86A-1-NA and P-86A-5-NA becoming the XF-86, F-86A-1-NA and F-86A-5-NA.
Later in their service lives, some or all of the XP-86s were informally labeled as “YF-86s”.
