Rajouri

Rajouri was an important kingdom in ancient times known as Panchal Desa, ruled by King Panchal Naresh. According to historical texts, Rajouri was known as Rajapuri or Raja-vari and emerged as a principality in 1003 AD under its first ruler Raja Prithvi Paul. After becoming part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in 1846, its name was changed to Rampur by Maharaja Gulab Singh, who appointed Mian Hathu as governor and built Rajouri fort. In 1968, Rajouri became a separate district within the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The district contains several important religious and historical sites that are popular tourist destinations

According to Albaurni:- According to Rajatrangni by Jona Raja:-
• Visited Rajouri with 'Sultan Masud' in 1036 A.D. • Written during the period of Zain-ul-Abidin,
• In his book 'Tarikh-i-Hind', he wrote Rajouri as 'Raja-vari' also named Rajouri as 'Raja-Vari'

According to Tarikh-Rajgan-e-Rajor by Mirza Zafar-ulla:- According to Rajatarangni by Kalhana:-


• He described that Rajouri was originally known as 'Raj-Avar' and then changed from Rajour to Rajouri • Rajouri emerges as principality in about 1003 A.D.
• 1st Ruler was Raja Prithvi Paul.

After treaty of Amritsar 16 March 1846:- After Independence Rajouri become Poonch-Rajouri District Some Important points
• Maharaja Gulab Singh changed name of Rajouri to Rampur. • On 1 January 1968, Rajouri emerged as new District. • During Alexander Invasion

Dedicated to Sain Ganji Sahib, who was born
in a Gujjar family at Fatehpur.
8. Tata Pani
A famous hot water Spring
or Sulphur Spring.
9. Doodadhari Temple
Was built in the memory of Saint 'Dudhadhari Baba'
Who is believed to have survived only on milk.
10. Dhanidhar Fort
Built by Mian Hathu (1846-56)
11. Chingus Fort/Saria
Built by Mughal Emperor 'Jahangir' died here in 1628 A.D.
