INTRODUCTION

BHAKTI SHARMA

Known as the ‘Jalpari’ from Rajasthan, Open Water Swimmer –

BHAKTI SHARMA, a name which creates a sparkle in almost every
Udaipurite’s eye. Born in City of Lakes – Udaipur, she has made her
name with her determination, achievements and constant struggle to
promote the sport of swimming.

Bhakti Sharma is an inspiration to all the Indians who are passionate

to achieve their dreams.
Though this name requires no introduction, I would still like to share
Bhakti’s feats of glory:

1) Crossed the English

Channel (covered 36 km in 13
hours and 55 minutes) in 2006.
2) Acquired first position in
the Rapperswil to Zurich
Marathon event in 2006.
3) The Following year, she
crossed the Gulf of Mexico,
the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific
Ocean and the Mediterranean
Sea etc.
4) On 29th August, 2012, she
was awarded with the
prestigious Tenzing Norgay
National Adventure
Award 2011 presented to her
by the President of India.
INTERVIEW
Interviewer: When did you start learning to swim? When did you
realize that this is what you want to do?
Bhakti: I started to swim when I was 2.5 years old. My mother taught
me the sport. Gradually, as I started participating in District and State
Level competitions, I moved forward in this field.

Interviewer: How was your mother as a mentor? What is her best

quality as the teacher?
Bhakti: She is a very good teacher; necessarily strict and
encouraging. Her best quality is the – ‘Never say Never’ attitude.

Interviewer: What was your first accomplishment as an Open Water

Swimmer?
Bhakti: My first open water (Sea) swim was from Iran port to
Gateway of India in the year 2003 which was 16 km.

Interviewer: What were the difficulties you faced in your passion for
sport?
Bhakti: Apart from the lack in official training for open water
swimming, getting financial backing was a major problem. Also,
arranging the swims in new and different countries is tough without
these factors.
Interviewer: Who is your idol and why?
Bhakti: I believe in learning from one and all. Hence, I don’t have a
specific idol I look upon to.

Interviewer: To whom do you owe your success so far?

Bhakti: My family and the almighty God.

Interviewer: What were the challenges you have faced in the

Antarctica Project?
Bhakti: The 0-2 degrees water temperature, cold weather. Also, there
is a great risk of hypothermia and heart attack.

Interviewer: What are your significant achievements so far?

Bhakti: I am the youngest swimmer to swim in 4 oceans so far. I
have been awarded the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award
by the President for the achievements in water adventure.

Interviewer: What changes would you ask the state government to

implement to promote swimming?
Bhakti: Well maintenance of the pools, all weather pools in cities like
Udaipur and Jodhpur; recognizing the local talents from rural areas.

Interviewer: What message would you like to give to people?

Bhakti: Never stop dreaming and strive hard to realize them.
Interviewer: Being an internationally recognized swimmer, after so
many achievements at hand; what do you plan next?
Bhakti: Next would be to excel professionally as well in the career
that I have chosen.

Interviewer: What inspired you to take up adventure sports,

somewhere being out of league in our society? How you found,
analyzed, planned & implemented over the opportunities?
Bhakti: There wasn’t a moment where I got inspired to take up
adventure sports. It has been a journey that was started only to try
something new and different. As I finished my swims successfully, it
kept inspiring me to go for the next one. And of course, the
encouragement from my family has been a major factor. For every
swim we had to do a lot of research online, there are swims for which
I have waited for a year to get everything sorted. But my family never
gave up, my mom used to sit online for hours looking for ways and
organizations, and my dad was always busy arranging resources for
the swims. I have been merely swimming.

Interviewer: Do you think taking up sports on a serious career basis

in Rajasthan still a risk? And wherever not, which sport would you
suggest being the safest (except Cricket) when it comes to financial
security?
Bhakti: People who take up sports seriously do for the love and
passion for it. It is really not something that promises financial
security, especially in Rajasthan. The ultimate destination is being a
coach or getting a job easier because of your contribution towards
sports. No sports is safest just for being that sport, the level at which
you are involved in the sport makes the difference.

Interviewer: Apart from swimming, what are your interests; what do

you like to do in your free time?
Bhakti: I like to read books and watch movies. I am a total movie
buff. And yes sleeping, I don’t leave a single opportunity to hit the
bed.
Interviewer: How does it feel; being awarded by the President, loads
of success at an early age? Do you find any changes in your personal
life after all this?
Bhakti: It feels just great to be awarded by the honorary President.
The happiness is more because my sport and achievements have been
recognized. Yes there is a change in my personal life, people have
started to look upto me with expectations, my friends look for me
reasons to ask for a party but above everything else, I have grown as a
person, not because of the awards but because of my swims. My
favourite memories are still form my swims more than the award
ceremonies.

Interviewer: A light one, where are your favorite hangouts when you
are in Udaipur?
Bhakti: I make sure to visit old city area in Udaipur every time I am
in the city. The roof top restaurants there are my favorites, German
bakery, and yes, the pani puri wala at durga nursery, Happinezz and
Dabeli wala at Sukhadia. Rani road is my preference when it comes to
going for a drive.

Interviewer: If ‘Bhakti Sharma’ was not a swimmer, what would she be?
Bhakti: Hahaha! I have been asking myself this question for a very
long time now, and haven’t got an answer yet. I could have been
anything if not a swimmer, there are a lot of other things that define
me, maybe something out of those would have dominated then.
Interviewer: Lastly, a message for the youth of Udaipur.
Bhakti: I see a tremendous change in the youth of Udaipur. There is
surely lot of talent in Udaipur, people just need to realize it and work
towards their dreams. Also, after being out of the city now, I feel the
pleasure and joy of coming from a small city and I want the youth of
Udaipur to feel the same pride.

Water has been Sharma’s best friend since Leena (Bhakti’s mother)
pushed her into the deep end in a 12-metre swimming pool at the age
of two. By 25, she had achieved the rare distinction of becoming the
first Asian woman, and youngest in the world, to complete open
swimming in the 1°C Antarctic waters, in a record time of 41.14
minutes (2.3 km). With it, she built an enviable résumé of having
swum in all the five oceans in the world.

She had immense potential. She built her endurance and strength with
designated workouts. A swimmer must have power and confidence to
deal with turning currents. Bhakti could easily combat such obstacles.
The tide, she hopes, will turn one day.

Biopics are the flavor of the season and Bollywood doesn't seem to
get out of this trend anytime soon. Now, Bhushan Kumar is going to
make a biopic on Bhakti Sharma.
CONCLUSION
As I read many interviews, I found that “She had always been
very vocal about their support of females. Their old ad campaign
was, ‘Why should boys have all the fun?’ She wanted to cover
stories of female achievers online. #Askwhy questions the status
quo, especially when it’s based on sex, race, anything. But also
#Askwhy to yourself: ‘What is your inner moral compass based
on? Why are you doing the things you are doing?’”

#Askwhy was a campaign (also an ad) organized by Hero Motors.

During public speaking engagement, she answers questions from

boys and girls who want to know how she’s achieved what she
has, how she does things. “Mentoring is not a role I’ve done
intentionally, but I always find time to talk to people and answer
their questions.”

She’s humble during an interview, saying she wouldn’t change

anything in her life. “Everything that happened to me has made
me who I am; that’s the reason I am where I am.”
