CHAPTER 1: Factoring of Polynomials
Performance Task:
Apply the different factoring techniques in solving the following problems. Write legibly.
1. Find the length of the plane figure if its area is 63m2n+56mno+35 and has a width of 7.
2. A dice has six faces and each side has an area of x8+18x4+81, what is the measure of its side?
3. A rectangular box has an x height, 3x+4 width, and 5x+1 length. What is the volume of the
rectangular box?
4. The General decided to use a square table for the assembly tomorrow. If the area of the table is
169x2-1000, what expression can represent its side?
5. The length of a rectangle is three more than two times its width. If its area is 2x 2 + 27x + 88, and its
width is x – 8, find the length.
6. A square chalkboards was placed at the back of the conference room because it was already
replaced by a brand new rectangular white board. If the rectangular white board has an area of
9y2+16x+8. What are the measures of its length and width?
7. The volume of a wooden box is given by the V = 4s 3 + 22s2 + 24s. Write an expression that shows
the dimensions of the box in terms of sides.
Note; The volume of the box is given by the formula V = (side)3
8. The volume of a cylinder is given by the expression 2πv 3 + 12πv2 + 18πv. Factor the expression
completely. Then identify the expression that show the radius and height of the cylinder
Note; The volume of the cylinder is given by the formula V = π(radius)2(height)
9. A farmer has a square lot. He wanted to put a wall barrier around it, if its perimeter is 48x 2-80xy-68y2.
What is the expression that represents its side?
Note; The perimeter of the square is given by the formula P = 4(side)
10. Suppose that your friend factors 24x2y + 36xy like this ;
24x2y + 36xy = 4xy(6x + 9)
= (4xy) (3) ( 2x + 3)
= 12xy ( 2x + 3)
Is this correct? Would you suggest any changes? Support your answer with a solution.
