5 - O D Surveys

The document discusses origin-destination (OD) surveys, which are used to understand travel patterns by collecting information on trip origins, destinations, purposes, and modes of transportation. OD surveys involve interviewing travelers at interview stations to gather data on place and time of origin, place and time of destination, route, trip purpose, vehicle type, and passenger numbers. The collected data is then used for transportation planning purposes like establishing routes, locating new infrastructure, and developing models to predict future trip generation and distribution. Common methods for conducting OD surveys include roadside interviews, home interviews, telephone surveys, and intercepting taxis or public transportation users.

Analysis and Interpretation of

Traffic Studies

Prof. Anuj Jaiswal, PhD

Dept. of Architecture & Planning
INTRODUCTION
 In a transportation study, it is often necessary to know the exact
origin and destination of the trips. The information yielded by O-D
survey includes land-use of the zones of origin and destination,
household characteristics of the trip making family, time of the day
when journeys are made, trip purpose and mode of travel.
 Origin is defined as the place where the trip begins and destination is
defined as the place where the trip ends.

 Origin-Destination (OD) studies are an important tool for

transportation Professionals. OD studies are conducted to understand
the pattern of the movement of Persons and goods in a particular area
of interest during a particular period of time (Wang, 1997).
O & D SURVEY
 The origin and destination study is carried out mainly to know the

origin and destination of various trips .

 In this study the data collected are, mode of travel, their origin and

destination, number of passengers in each vehicle, route etc.

 Landuse of the zone of origin and Destination

 Household characteristics of the trip making facilities

 Time of the day when the journey are made

 Trip purpose and mode of travel

USE OF O & D SURVEY
 To establish preferential routes for various categories of vehicles

 To location of new proposed roads

 To location of parking palaces

 To locate expressway/Bypasses

 To regulate movement of heavy vehicles

 To locate new bridge as per traffic demands

 To know the flow of traffic in an urban area

•To determine the amount of by passable traffic that enters in the city
• To development trip generation and trip distribution models in
transportation planning process
