MEDIA

Media portrayals of our society also reveal its makeup and modes of

operation. Media, including written, electronic, and internet content, is the only tool

that helps to keep people informed. The general audience is entertained while also

being educated and made more aware of current affairs. Right now, our society's

voice comes from the media. Young people's thoughts and the minds of different

groups in our society have been beautifully stimulated by a variety of media outlets.

PRINT MEDIA

Before the development of radio broadcasting in the 1920s and television

in 1930s and later, newspapers were the main way in which people found out about

what was going on in the world around them. The first real newspaper was founded in

Germany in 1615, and over the next 250 years many papers were established. Most of

them were small and were bought by only a few people. The cheap popular

newspaper with a big circulation has developed since the 1890s, when for the first

time most people in Western Europe and North America were able to read. A

newspaper provides four main services to its readers. First of all it contains news,

some of it reported in great detail, some just mentioned. Second, it gives the readers

background information about people and things in the news, so that they can

understand what is happening.

Third, it provides features, which include all kinds of material not related

to the news, such as special articles, crossword puzzles, strip cartoons, and services

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 4

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

such as TV programmers and weather forecasts. There features are often in a special

section of the paper; other sections may be devoted to sport or financial news. The

fourth service provided by a newspaper is to carry advertising. Although there are

many other ways of advertising, for instance on radio, television and posters, many

kinds of goods and services can only be adequately advertised in a newspaper. They

include jobs vacant and wanted, small articles for sale, holiday services, and financial

matters.

Print Media was introduced in India by the British who had colonized it.

But Indians used it to propagate the ideals of a free India. So the history of print

media is the history of the freedom struggle.

The Earliest Newspapers:

In Caesar’s time Rome had a newspaper and it was called the Acta Diurna

(actions of the day), written on a tablet, was posted on a wall after each meeting of the

Senate. Its circulation was one, and there is no reliable measure of its total readership.

However, it does show that people have always wanted to know what was happening

and that others have helped them to do so. The developments such as the art of paper

making in china in the 9th Century, the invention of Johann Gutenberg’s printing

machine in Mainz in the 15th century and William Caxtons Printing Press in 1476

strengthened journalism and gave rise to newsletters which was sent by book sellers in

London to people interested in them.

The earliest news-book was published in 1573 and usually it contained just

a description of one important event of national importance. The newspaper as they

are recognized today have their roots in 17th Century Europe, Corantos, one-page

news sheets about specific events, were printed in English in Holland in 1620 and

imported to England by British booksellers who were eager to satisfy public demand

for information about continental happenings.

Englishmen Nathaniel Butter, Thomas Archer, and Nicholas Bourne

eventually began printing their own occasional news sheets, using the same title for

consecutive editions. They stopped publishing in 1641, the same year that regular,

daily accounts of local news started appearing in other news sheets. These true

forerunners of the present daily newspaper were called diurnals. Political power

struggle in England at this time boosted the fledgling medium, as partisans on the side

of the monarchy and those on the side of Parliament published 6 diurnals to bolster

their positions. When the monarchy prevailed, it granted monopoly publication rights

to the Oxford Gazette the official voice of the Crown. Founded in 1665 and later

renamed the London Gazette this journal used a formula of foreign news, official

information, regular proclamation and local news that become the model for the first

colonial newspaper. The writings of the 18th Century Writers such as Henry Fielding,

Daniel Defoe (The Review), Jonathan Swift, Addison and Steele (The Tatler, The

Spectator and The Guardian), Dr. Samuel Jhonson (The Rambler, The Idler) paved a

new path for journalistic writings which was encouraging and profitable for

journalism. The emergence of journalism as a profession started when postal services,

printing technique and the material for the newspaper were available in plenty way.

During the 18th century, press in England was dominated by the

politicians. The reports that came in the journals of the politicians were taken to the

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 6

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

court of law on the grounds of edition and libel. However, the newspapers of those

days were not well organized and authenticity as well as authority to check on the

truth of the reports were lacking. Further, the purchase was less and the numbers of

readers were very high in number. Coffee Houses and Ale houses provided newspaper

to attract more number of customers.

PRINT MEDIA IN INDIA

Print Media was introduced in India by the British who had colonized

it. But Indians used it to propagate the ideals of a free India. So the history of print

media is the history of the freedom struggle. Various expressive measures were

introduced by the ruling British to exercise control over the press. The first newspaper

published in India was the Bengal Gazette or The Calculta General Advertiser. It was

brought out in 1780 by a Britisher called James Augustus Hickey. He was arrested

and sentenced for imprisonment in addition to heavy lines for the scurrilous attacks on

the private life of the officials of East India Company, the Governor-General Warran

Hastings, his wife and the Chief Justice.

All these oppressive measures left Hicky in utter penury. Several

newspapers came into existence after Hicky’s newspaper. Quite aware of the Hicky’s

bitter experience, newspapers such as India Gazette, Calcutta Gazette, Bengal Journal,

Oriental magazine of Calcutta Amusement and Calcutta chronicle exercised great

caution in publishing news. The first newspaper published from Madras was the

Madras Courier followed by Madras Gazette and Indian Herald. Censorship was

introduced first in Madras in 1795. It was followed by the Courier and Bombay

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 7

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

Gazette. All the above said the first newspaper published from Bombay was Bombay

Herald. Newspapers were started by the British men and they catered to the needs of

the European population in India.

The most significant aspect of this period was that there were no press

laws as such, but the Government took action under one pretext or another against

those newspapers which published unpalatable news. The nature of Government’s

action was to send back to England “incorrigible” editors, withdraw postal concession

and imposing censorship on those newspapers which caused displeasure to the

Government. Because of these restrictions many newspapers started with a view to

support the freedom struggle had to fall by the way side and their editors and

publishers were put 9 behind the bars.

When one speaks about the earliest history of Indian journalism the papers

that come to one’s mind are The Hindu of Madras, The Amrita Bazar Patrika of

Calcutta, and The Indian Patriot of Malabar, which now forms part of Kerala. Of these

The Hindu is still in existence.

SUPPLEMENTS

Newspaper supplements are one of the most effective ways of spreading

planning and design ideas to large numbers of people and generating public debate.

They are particularly useful for presenting proposals from action planning events,

especially if combined with other coverage before and afterwards. A working

relationship is established between those promoting community planning initiatives

and the local papers editors and journalists.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 8
INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

Standard newspaper coverage is used to publicize activities and generate

debate: news stories, feature articles, letters, legal notices, guest columnists. Special

supplements are used to provide in-depth coverage of planning proposals and

community planning activities. Feedback is generated through the letters pages,

readership polls and follow-up features. A newspaper supplement, often a weekly

section of its parent, usually has a tabloid or Sunday magazine format and covers

wide-ranging and less time-critical subjects, as in The American Weekly, the 2004

version of Life. Newspaper supplements became common in France and Germany in

the mid to late 19th century—they were called feuilleton in French. In Chinese, they

are called Fukan

HISTORY OF THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS

The New Indian Express is an Indian English-language broadsheet daily

newspaper published by the Chennai-based Express Publications. It was founded in

1932 as The Indian Express, under the ownership of Chennai-based Mr. Ramnath

Goenka. In 1933, The Indian Express opened its second office in Madurai and

launched the Tamil daily Dinamani on September 11, 1934. At that time it had to face

stiff competition from the well-established The Hindu and The Mail, besides other

prominent newspapers. In the late 1930s, the circulation was no more than 2,000.

In 1939 Goenka bought out Andhra Prabha, a prominent Telugu daily. It

gained the name Three Musketeers for the three dailies. In 1940 the whole premises

FUNCTIONS OF THE NEWS DESK

The functioning of the news desk is basically of two types, on one hand its

functioning starts from the point the reporting section finishes its job that is once the

reporters of the newspaper collects different reports and information and submit them

on the desk, they are composed and presented to the sub-editors for subbing. The copy

after being composed goes through sub-editors, chief sub-editor and news editor and

sometimes even the editor depending upon its importance. The copies are also sent to

the proof reader for spelling corrections..

News room functions are broadly divided under six heads:

(a) Receiving/acquiring news reports

(b) Selection of news reports

(c) Editing and headlining of selected items

(d) Composing of edited news items

(e) Proof-reading of composed matter

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 29

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

THE EDITOR

Editor is the professional head of the editorial department but his/her

position is not confined to this department alone. Editor is too big a person in the

newspaper set-up and he/she is regarded as the representative of the newspaper in the

outside world. Thus he/she becomes the first person in the organization.

MANAGING EDITOR

In any newspaper, the ambition of the proprietor can lead him/her to

acquire a position higher than the editor in the editorial set-up. But the problem occurs

how to find a designation which is more loaded and catchy. In some newspapers, the

proprietors have found a solution to this problem, as they decide to designate

themselves as managing editors.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The editor of a chained publication or multi-edition newspaper is

normally designated as Editor-in-chief or Chief Editor. Editor-in-chief is responsible

for all the editorial matter published in various editions of the newspaper. He/she

takes decisions on policy matters and issues necessary guidelines for the editorial

working. There are exceptions to the above rule.

We can find editorial head designated as Chief Editor even in newspaper

which are published from one place only. Chief Editor is one who leads all the

publications of a group.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 30

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

RESIDENT EDITOR

Resident editor is a senior editorial person who heads the editorial

department in a particular unit of the newspaper.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR

In newspapers where the proprietor decides to become the editor himself

or herself, a professional journalist has to be employed to discharge the functions of

editor. This professional journalist is normally designated as Executive Editor.

ASSISTANT EDITOR

A newspaper can have one or more than one assistant editor. An assistant

editor is next to the editor in the hierarchy of the editorial department. He/she is a very

senior person who is always ready to take up an assignment given by the editor or the

management.

NEWS EDITOR

The news editor is one of the most important persons who plan a daily

newspaper. His role in a newspaper office is supreme. In a daily newspaper, an active

and enterprising news editor is always seen loaded. He/she is an intelligent person

who knows how to give the newspaper a new look. He/she is responsible for a steady

and continuous inflow of news in the news room.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 31

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

CHIEF SUB-EDITOR

An Indian newspaper, according to the general pattern, has three chief sub-

editors, each heading a shift and all together contributing to the making of a daily. A

chief sub is a senior desk executive who uses his news sense to examine all copies

that come to the desk during his duty hours. He selects a few of them considered

newsworthy and distributes them to individual sub-editors for editing.

SUB -EDITOR

The task of the sub-editors is to choose, select and fashion the enormous mass

of raw material – news, features and articles – into finished products. This involves

several steps like (i) the cutting down and, sometimes, rewriting the manuscript,

insertion of punctuation, the detection and correction of errors and imperfections, and

(ii) the supplying of suitable headlines. Sub-Editors sift and organize the news in such

a way that the reader does not have to search for information.

They make the product, that is the news story, easy to read and worth reading.

This is accomplished by selecting news intelligently, interpreting it carefully and

presenting it attractively. This is indeed creative work which requires knowledge,

imagination, writing skills and judgment. Editing is the most challenging fact of

journalism. A good editors needs creative skills, command over the language, ideas to

improve the copy, and correct judgment about how much importance should be given

for a particular news item. The copy of the report has been improved by the sub-editor

and is therefore easier to read and understand.

news stories, I will reassign it to the head for him to examine it and point out the

mistakes. The same goes with the sub-editors who works at the desk. The head of our

desk examines the edited news and polish them once again and it will be published in

the newspapers or the e-papers. We used a software called “NEWSWRAP” in which

the unedited news copies will be uploaded for the editors to edit.

Following this the edited news will be designed for the paper. The Assistant Editor

who is our head also concentrates on designing the Tiruchy e-paper. He is responsible

for the design and make-up of the page. He has the pole position in the daily desk. He

is engaged in editing the news stories in an innovative way.

He gives the newspaper a relook making sure that news enters the readers mind

steadily and continuously. He also deals with the captions of the pictures and the

insertion of them during page makeup. The Tiruchy desk of THE NEW INDIAN

EXPRESS not only covers the Tiruchy news but also the news stories from the

districts of Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur and Puducherry. Various

reporters will upload the news which were collected by them throughout the day for

there particular desk in which I was assigned to do my internship and the main task

which was given to me as a trainee sub-editor was to edit and polish these copies

making it vivid for the readers to stay informed.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 35

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

After working in the Tiruchy desk of THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS,

CHENNAI for a month, I was able to gain knowledge on ethical journalism subjects

like responsibility, press freedom, independence, sincerity, integrity, and correctness,

as well as objectivity.

I had the opportunity to edit a few copies for the Tiruchy desk, including those

about the ESIC protest, farmers protesting the electricity tariff, and farmers asking for

the opening of new DPS centers. Journalism interns will hone their abilities in a range

of areas during their internship. An intern will learn how to conduct interviews,

manage deadlines, edit the work of other experts, respect the ethical standards of

journalism, and establish connections with sources. Even reading the news keeps us

informed and adds to our knowledge.

I have learned a lot about the editing department, editors' responsibilities, and

the significance of the department. The challenges of editing and how to translate a

story into English are other things I've learnt. I was able to gain real-world experience

in the print media industry. I was in a position to analyze and develop my own goals,

guiding principles, and definitions of success on both a personal and professional

level. In business settings, I had the chance to evaluate and improve my writing and

editing techniques. This experience will help me not only in the field of content

editing, but it will also equip me with the abilities I need to succeed in any other

profession I choose to work in in the future.

Conclusion
CONCLUSION

After finishing my industrial exposure training, I was given a glimpse of what

it's like to work at a press and print media agency. Throughout my internship, I gained

a better understanding of what print media is and, in particular, of the daily activities

of desk editors. My preparation for being a responsible and creative person will come

from this experience. In addition, this job gave me the opportunity to develop my self-

governance, personality, appreciation for others, patience, creativity, and capability to

express oneself creatively.

I've gotten criticism and guidance from the editors during my training time

when mistakes were committed. Nevertheless, I was able to correct and stop repeating

those errors thanks to their suggestions. I had also improved my editing abilities in

addition to that. To sum up, the skills I picked up throughout industrial training will

be very helpful to me in the future as I deal with difficulties in the workplace.

I had the opportunity to learn about organization throughout the industrial

training. My experience taught me the unquestionable value of managing

interpersonal relationships, which is a significant lesson. It may be claimed that this

skill is just as crucial as the knowledge required to carry out a job's fundamental tasks.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 38

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE TRAINING 2022

In a typical classroom context, you don't get to work on things like this very often, so

this internship gave me an excellent opportunity to advance over my modest

experience level. This chance is a big privilege in my eyes.

I started working in the sports section of The

My request to assist ‘The New Indian Express'
Newspaper
sports section was granted. The ethics and
4-Jul-2022 Sports 4
procedures of newspaper editing were taught to
Department
me.

I was instructed to observe how my guide

writes news articles and edits them in order to
publish them. The components of a news story
Newspaper were taught to me, and I learnt how reporters
5-Jul-2022 Sports gather information, send scripts to editors, and 4

I was told to pay closer attention to what the

senior writers do in order to become more at

I was given the task of proof reading desk news

Newspaper reviewed and pointed out the errors after I had

Department

I had a lifetime experience to interview Ashish

Newspaper
11-Jul- Nehra (former cricketer) representing The New
Sports 4
2022 Indian Express in a select media interaction
Department

I arrived at the workplace at 4:30, and my

the news into several categories. I discovered
Newspaper how news organizations organize stories
12-Jul-
Sports according to news weightage. Ten 4
2022
Department representatives from each desk were present at
the meeting. The reporters and editors had a
video conference where they each clarified
their individual news for the editors.

At my desk, I had a conversation with the

subeditors. Asked them about their journey to

Following up the given precept, they analyzed

16-Jul-
Sports of the value of by-lines, place lines, leads, and 4
2022

New Indian Express webpage on 17th July,
2022.

I went through a dozen copies, both edited and

Sports 4

I went through various other copies of the news

Newspaper have to be made to refine the news. I further
19-Jul-
Sports edited a few copies and got them reviewed. I 4
2022
Department learned how to edit promotional content, and
most of the news concerned the upcoming
Chess Olympiad.

I was taught about the importance of

readability while editing news stories. On
average, sentences should be no more than 18
words long. A statement that is more than 18
Newspaper
20-Jul- words in length is difficult to read. I was
Sports 4
2022 advised to avoid using complicated word
Department
forms. The very best when composing news
pieces is to use simple language and short,
simple sentences. Later, I edited news stories
keeping this in mind and got them reviewed.

21-Jul- Newspaper I was taught the significance of accuracy. I was 4

2022 Sports trained to verify the facts several times until I
Department am certain in their accuracy. It is especially
significant when background information is
included, such as dates and names. I was told to
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, SKASC. 44

speak with a reporter in order to verify his

data. Thus, I learned that it is better not to say
anything than to express it incorrectly.

As an department intern, I was tasked with

editing articles produced by reporters or
features writers. I had to correct spelling and
grammatical issues before drafting a story. The
Newspaper reporter's goal is to compose the piece as
22-Jul-
Sports rapidly as possible with all of the information 4
2022
Department and numbers. In their hurry, they may be
unable to polish the language. So I learned that
an editor's responsibility is to ensure that the
report is written correctly and without
errors. As usual, I edited a couple of copies.

My mentor taught me how to develop strong

story headlines and titles that represent the
essence of the article. The title should be brief,
Newspaper
23-Jul- catchy, and convey the essence of the
Sports 4
2022 work. The title should attract the reader to
Department
continue reading. The title should be
straightforward as well. After that, I edited a
few headlines and had it evaluated.

I learned how to shorten news articles. It is

critical to keep an article to a specific
length. My guide showed me what I could do,
Newspaper such as which sections, paragraphs, tables, or
24-Jul-
Sports illustrations might be removed, which parts 4
2022
Department could be reduced, and which marginally related
elements could be removed. Understanding the
importance of the provided size, I edited

Newspaper vocabulary, and grammatical errors and
25-Jul-
Sports ensured that everything adhered to style. I 4
2022
Department confirmed names, titles, dates, and places with
the appropriate reporters. I was encouraged to
use active voice rather than passive voice
whenever possible, since it makes readers feel
more at ease while reading.

I was asked to edit four copies, which I revised

and reviewed to see if the 'intro' or 'lead'
answered the five W's and one H; what, when,
where, who, why, and how. I attempted to
Newspaper
26-Jul- tighten up several carelessly written
Sports 4
2022 paragraphs. For easier reading, I grouped
Department
smaller paragraphs and divided larger
paragraphs into smaller ones. I made sure the
lead explains and summarizes, as well as sets
the tone, pace, and flavor of the piece.

I was taught the essential news aspects. Many

individuals believe that editing just involves
making copy error-free and legible. Editing,
however, is much more than these two
Newspaper things. It necessitates a wide variety of
27-Jul-
Sports characteristics. Following editorial policy and 4
2022

The main aim of introducing our product into the market is to offer an equal

opportunity for the consumers in each district Example (Erode, Tirupur, Nilgiris) to

receive information of what is going on around the world by providing them with a

high quality newspaper that is relatively affordable.

Access to Internet has significantly reduced the demand for newspapers as many

people opt to read news online. The New Indian Express will have a broad coverage

from news, politics, business, entertainment, lifestyle, sports, commentaries, to

obituaries.

Concepts in the discussion/ project

The main aim was to learn the nuances of editing from the editors by discussing the

news stories, thus the discussion involves a lot of teaching and correcting the errors.

Correctness, accountability, freedom of the press, independence, sincerity,

truthfulness, and accuracy were among the primary ideas discussed. When editing

news, an editor must closely adhere to these principles.

Viability/ Aim/Purpose

The main aim and purposes of the Indian express newspapers are to inform,

interpret and entertain. Newspapers help readers become informed by providing them

with facts, statistics and opinion columns. Most newspapers feature stories that

represent the opinion of the newspaper management and that of the editors. Some of

the other services provided by a newspaper include classified ads, display ads and

feature stories.
