Answer these:
How do you describe the challenges that any teenager has in his or
her life?
The issues that today's teenagers face are diverse but, in many
cases, interconnected. Being sensitive to teens and their exposure
to a variety of emotions (puberty being one of the most important
experiences) is an important step in understanding their transition.
Anger, confusion, jealousy, non-compliant attitudes, dislike for their
parents or elders, secrecy/high need for privacy, and so on are
some of the emotions or feelings they experience. Defiance stems
from their inability to appropriately deal with the intensity of these
emotions, which exacerbates common adolescent problems.
Unsurprisingly, all of these common adolescent problems are linked
in some way. However, having one does not necessarily imply
having the other.
The common teenage problems that teenagers face today are
usually related to:
Self-Esteem and Body Image
Stress
Bullying
Depression
Cyber Addiction
Drinking and Smoking
Teen Pregnancy
Underage Sex
Defiant Behaviors
Peer-Pressure and Competition
What are the changes that could possibly take in a child’s life?
• Interactions between children influence all aspects and stages of
their development. Relationships are, in fact, the foundation of a
child's development. Through connections, a child learns important
information about the world. For example, your child will discover
whether the world is safe and secure, whether they are loved and
by whom, what happens when they cry or laugh, and much more.
Interpersonal relationships, such as how you interact with other
family members, can also teach the child. This knowledge serves
as the foundation for your child's development of speech, behavior,
social, and other skills.
How different are a child’s concerns as he or she advanced in age?
• While the focus is frequently on the link between advanced
maternal age and birth abnormalities, new research has revealed
that children with older paternal ages have poorer neurocognitive
outcomes. A 2009 study found that having an older father was
associated with minor deficits in neurocognitive outcomes during
childhood and infancy.

REFLECTION
When are the critical periods of transition for individuals with special
needs? Why are these periods considered critical?
The transition from one state or condition to another is referred to as a
transition. Many significant transitions occur in each person's life, and
many of them are associated with predictable life events, such as starting
preschool, graduating from elementary school, and entering middle
adulthood. The transition from school to young adulthood is one of the
most critical transition periods for students with learning disabilities (LD).

Lesson 2: Strategies in Managing Transitions
Answer the following:
Have you ever experienced at one time in your life where worry or anxiety
is caused by transition? How did you make your choice? Who helped you
in making decisions?
Anxiety is a natural human emotion that is an important part of our lives,
our very existence. In 'fight or flight' state, anxiety helps us recognize and
respond to danger. It can inspire us to face our fears and take on
challenging tasks. The proper amount of worry can improve our
performance and spark action and creativity. However, anxiousness has
another face. Consistent anxiety can produce significant mental suffering
and, in the worst-case scenario, anxiety disorders such as panic attacks,
phobias, and obsessional behaviors. Anxiety at this level can have a
severe and distressing effect on our life, as well as our physical and
mental health.
What can teachers do to help children with special needs prepare for
successful lives as adults?
o I believe that teachers help children with special needs prepare for
successful lives as adults by teaching them how to be well-mannered and
prepared to meet all of life's problems. Teachers also assist children in
learning lessons that they may apply as individuals.
ASSESSMENT
Instruction: Complete the tasks below.
Create a concept map showing the framework of the steps in transition.
Interview a Special Education teacher on strategies utilized in changing
from one activity to another in the classroom. Make a critique of the
information based on what you have learned from this module.
o I believe that there are many different methods to learn effectively, and
that the teacher is aware of the most effective learning style. Organize and
assign activities that are appropriate for each student's abilities; educate
and mentor students in groups, small groups, and one-on-one; and create
individualized education plans that are written in parent-friendly language.
Because there are times when behavior is toned in class but not continued
at home, which has a significant impact on the learner's progress, family-
teacher coordination is required. The behavioral component, which is the
most difficult component in special education, teaches unacceptable
behaviors, especially those that are not toned.
I believe that getting to know your students is critical in providing them
with the specific and varied strategies they require, particularly for
students with special needs who are socially, mentally, and physically
different from the norm to the point where standard school practices must
be modified. To satisfy the IEP's goals, objectives, and current levels of
performance, a teacher must be knowledgeable of a student's strengths
and weaknesses, as well as learner behavior. A favorable working
environment has a significant impact on students' achievement by
ensuring that content-savvy people intervene and assist them. As a
special education teacher, I make it a point to be well-prepared in terms of
how to effectively manage instructional time.

REFLECTION
Why is the transition through the life span of the individual with special
needs not a “bed of rose”?
o Maybe because they have difficulties and an issue that they can't
control on their own, according to my understanding. This
demonstrates that a child who is seriously impaired in all four
functional disability categories has a 50% chance of living to be 13
years old and a 25% chance of living to be 30 years old.
What does this statement imply regarding transition?
o This observation highlights the significance of learning the story
before passing judgment on what we see. We can't tell whether a
child is typical or unusual because they all live in the same
neighborhood but have different approaches.
There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly.
---Buckminster Fuller
o Change is a continuous process. When you are separated from someone
for an extended period of time, you will notice that they have changed
when you see them again. A person's potential cannot be determined
simply by looking at them. Allow people to grow and change. Whatever
they are now, they have the potential to become something better in the
future. Allow them time to develop and change. The same is true for you.
You have a lot of potential and are always evolving. Better things are on
the way. Spread your wings and soar with your dreams.
