SUBJECT: LANDING GEAR - NOSE WHEEL ASSEMBLY
ALTERNATIVE BEARING AND SEALS FOR BEARING CONE 13685
SECTION I - PLANNING INFORMATION
1. EFFECTIVITY: This Service Bulletin is applicable to Nose Wheel Assembly 5010598 and
5010598-1 used on Canadair Regional Jet and CL604 aircraft.
2. CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS: None.
3. REASON: Some operators have reported bearing seals that need to be replaced before the
bearing cone is ready for replacement. Three physically interchangeable bearing seals exist
for the Bearing Cone 13685. The operator can apply any of these alternative arrangements for
the wheel assembly to better serve the operator's logistics. Some operators would prefer to
use a bearing seal with a dual lip seal that gives improved bearing hub seal.
4. DESCRIPTION: This Service Bulletin is issued to tell operators that an alternative
combination bearing cone with integral pressed-on bearing seal is available for replacement of
Bearing Cone 13685 and single lip Bearing Seal 5011378. This combination is Timken
13600LA902A3. The Bearing Cone and Bearing Seal combination 13600LA902A3 features a
13685 Bearing and a bearing seal that is not sold separately. Also, double lip Bearing Seal
5011064 is available for direct replacement of single lip Bearing Seal 5011378. After the
bearing seal of 13600LA902A3 is worn out, it can be removed and discarded and the bearing
put back into service paired with either Bearing Seal 5011378 or 5011064. These
combinations are shown in Figure 1. The double lip seals of 13600LA902A3 and 5011064
have superior sealing with low viscosity grease such as Mobil 28 and feature improved
prevention of contamination from entering the bearing grease cavity. This Service Bulletin also
provides rework instructions of the bearing seal 13600LA to reduce the possible loss of
bearing preload.
5. COMPLIANCE: This Service Bulletin to be completed at or before the next overhaul.
6. APPROVAL: Compliance with this Service Bulletin does not alter FAA Parts Manufacture
Approval (PMA) conformance.
7. MANPOWER: No additional manpower is required when done at a wheel overhaul.
8. WEIGHT AND BALANCE: None.
9. ELECTRICAL LOAD DATA: No Effect.

Wheel Assembly 5010598 and 5010598-1 used on the Canadair Regional Jet and
CL604 aircraft (basic issue dated 15 June 1992).
12. OTHER PUBLICATIONS AFFECTED:
A. The IPL section and other sections as applicable, of the Component Maintenance
Manual or Overhaul Manual will be revised at the next revision to include this Service
Bulletin.
13. INTERCHANGEABILITY AND INTERMIXABILITY: In all instances the bearing cone is
13685. When fitted with a pressed-on seal it becomes 13600LA902A3. Bearing Seals
5011064 and 5011378 are loose mounting parts not connected to Bearing Cone 13685 and
are held into position by torquing of the axle nut. The spacing along the axle is identical with all
of the arrangements thus providing complete functional interchangeability of parts.

NOTE: To maintain warranty coverage, use only Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems approved
replacement parts.

the release of this Service Bulletin.

SECTION III - ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
1. Replace bearing cone and bearing seals when mated with Bearing Cup 13621 as follows:
(See Figure 1 for bearing and bearing seal configurations).
A. Bearing Seals 5011064, 5011378 and 13600LA are completely interchangeable on
MABS wheels using Bearing Cone 13685 and Bearing Cup 13621.
NOTE: The Bearing Seal 13600LA is not sold separately and can only be purchased in
the Bearing Cone and Seal 13600LA902A3 as a complete set.
B. Bearing Cone with Bearing Seal 13600LA902A3 is completely interchangeable on MABS
wheels using Bearing Cup 13621 and replacing Bearing Cone 13685 with the mating
Bearing Seal, either 5011064 or 5011378.
2. Due to the skim coat of rubber on Bearing Seal 13600LA, there may be a loss of bearing
preload. Prior to installation of Bearing Seal 13600LA into the wheel half, the skim coat of
rubber must be removed by hand trimming from the Bearing Seal 13600LA as shown in Figure
2.
3. Re-identify Bearing Seal 13600LA as follows:
A. Vibra-etch (or equivalent) this service bulletin number “SB CL604-32-4/RJ-32-14 REV 1”.
in 0.12 inch (3,05 mm) characters into the metal surface where the rubber skim coat has
been removed by hand trimming. See Figure 2.
