Dr. Verghese Kurein

EDUCATION –

 Graduated in science from Loyola College in 1940.


 Hisdegree in Engineering from the Guindy College of
Engineering in Chennai.
 Graduate Apperentice at TISCO technical Institute,
Jamshedpur
 Obtained Govt. of India’s scholarship to study Dairy
Engineering.
 Training at Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and
Dairying, Bangalore.
 Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering with Dairy
Engineering as a minor subject at Michigan State University,
United States in 1948.

CAREER –

 Assigned to a Government Creamery located at Anand,


Gujarat.
 Arrived on Anand on Friday, the 13th May 1949. At the end
of 1949, he got release order from his job. But Shri
Trivuvandas Patel (Chairman of Kaira District Co-operative
Milk Producers Unit) requested him to stay with him for
more time.

 First Dairy Cooperative Union in Gujarat was formed in


1946.
 Member Societies – 18,600
 Members – 3.6 million members pour milk every day (twice
a day)
 Milk Procurement has increased from 20 million metric tons
per year in 60s to 122 million metric tons in 2011 and to 155.5
million metric tons in 2019.

OPERATION FLOOD (13 Jan 1970) -

 Through an investment of Rs. 1700 crores spread across 25


years, Operation Flood helped to raise India’s milk
production in value terms to Rs. 55000 crores per annum an
output ratio unmatched by any other development
programme in the world. Operation Flood has emerged as
India’s largest rural employment programme.
