Latitude and Longitude

Students will answer the following questions: 1. What are the imaginary lines that divide the globe into hemispheres? 2. What is the difference between latitude and longitude? 3. Locate the approximate latitude and longitude of Pagadian City. 4. Why is it important to know the exact location of places on Earth? 5. How can you apply what you have learned in real life situations? CLOSURE (5 minutes): Summarizing the Lesson Summary: Today we learned about the imaginary lines that divide the globe into hemispheres such as the equator, tropics, polar circles. We also differentiated latitude from longitude and applied them in locating places on Earth such

INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTUALIZATION (ICon) and INQUIRY-BASED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE

The distance north or south of the equator

It is an imaginary line around the middle of the

Earth and divides the planet into Northern and
Southern Hemisphere

A half of the Earth, usually as divided into northern

and southern halves by the equator, or into western
and eastern halves by an imaginary line passing
through the poles

The distance measured in degrees east or west

from an imaginary line that goes from the North
Pole to the South Pole

A meridian in a geographic coordinate system at

which longitude is defined to be 0 0

EXPLORE (15 minutes): Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills
ACTIVITY PROPER: EXPLORING THE WORLD
Divide the class into five groups. Students will perform a modified Activity 1: Where in the World is the
Philippines? (Part I) in the form of game.

Game: Where in the World is the Philippines? (Part 1) Mechanics: There are two levels in this game.
Level 1: The students will be tasked to identify the different imaginary lines in the globe. The teacher will
read the hint and call on a group to answer. The first group to answer correctly will be given a point.

Level 2: The teacher will call out a pair of latitude and longitude, and the groups will look for the nearest
city or country. After that, do the opposite, calling out the name of a city or country and the groups will race
to find the latitude and longitude of that city or country.

Note: Use a map instead on globe in this level. Approximate latitude and longitude are acceptable answers
and countries instead of cities will also be accepted as answers.

Group 1. Instructions: Draw a globe showing the latitude and longitude lines. Provide a short description of
latitude and longitude.

Circle and Antarctic Circle. Provide a short a description.

Group 3 – Instruction: Use the Venn Diagram to differentiate the latitude from longitude.

Group 4. Instruction: Identify the city nearest to the following rounded latitudes and longitudes.
