April 12-14, 2023

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:


Critique a literary selection based on the following approaches.
(EN10WC-IIIg-14)

a. define literary criticism;


b. show appreciation on the importance of formalist, moralist and Marxist
approaches in critiquing;
c. critique a selection choosing the three approaches

References: Quarter 3, Module 4

IV. Teaching and Learning Process

A. Engage

To begin the class, the teacher will conduct an activity entitled “Jumble
Bee”. The students will be divided into 3 groups. Each group will be
given a set of jumbled words, they will mix and match the letters to
reveal the correct answer. The teacher will give an example of literary
texts as a clue to guess. The students will be given 3 minutes to finish
the task. Once completed, representative every group will present the
assembled words to the class.
B. Explore

After they present their answers to the class, the teacher prepared
guide questions to be answered by another representative from every
group. The guide questions will be: What have you observe in the
words you assembled? What is the connection of the activity to our
lesson for today?

C. Explain

Before proceeding to the proper discussion of the topic, the teacher will
ask once more what is literary criticism all about. She will call 2-3
students to give their own idea upon hearing the word. After that, she
will proceed to the discussion of the new lesson.

D. Elaborate

To test the student’s knowledge about the topic, the teacher will give
another activity entitled “Fill me Up”. They will be given a copy of a
short story, ‘The Origin of Rice and Streams’. In the same group, they
will critique the story using the three different approaches they have
learned. The teacher will flash on the screen the guide in answering the
activity. After answering the activity, guide question will follow: Why it is
important to know these three approaches in critiquing a story? What
have you learned in the story you have read?

E. Evaluation

For evaluation, students will be tasked to reminisce their favorite story.


They will write the title and the short summary of what is the story all
about. They will make their own critique of the story they picked and
analyze what approach being applied in it.
