IS 303:1989

Reaffirmed 2013
Plywood for General Purposes

Scope

This standard covers the requirements of different grades and types of plywood used for
general purposes. In this standard, care has been taken to utilize the depleting wood resource
judiciously. A list of timber species for manufacture of plywood has been given in the standard
as guidance and specifies the two grades of plywood, depending upon the bond-strength
developed by the adhesive used for bonding the veneers; namely Boiling Water Resistant
(BWR) Grade, and Moisture Resistant (MR) Grade.

In addition, the standard specifies the type of plywood based on the general permissible defects
of the surface as Type A or B and the plywood board is designated by the quality of face
followed by the quality of back as Types AA, AB or BB.

a) Type AA shall have both surfaces of quality A,

b) Type AB shall have face of quality A and the back of quality B and
c) Type BB shall have both the surfaces of quality B.

Requirements

The standard gives details of permitted defects and specifies requirements for dimensions,
workmanship, glue adhesion and moisture content test.
