The Interpreter Code of Conduct

All LanguageLine OnSite Interpreters shall fully comply with the following Code of Ethics.

    A. Confidentiality
The interpreter treats as confidential all information learned in the performance of their
professional duties, while observing relevant requirements regarding disclosure. This
information shall not be communicated, published or in any way divulged to any organization or
person, other than the organization or person engaging the services of the interpreter.

    B. Accuracy and Completeness
The interpreter shall render, to the best of his/her ability, a complete and accurate
interpretation without altering or omitting anything that is stated, giving consideration to
linguistic variations and cultural considerations in both languages, as well as conveying the tone
and spirit of the original message. The interpreter shall not omit, summarize, add to what is
said, embellish, provide unsolicited explanations, or assume anything to be true except for what
has already been stated by either the client or the Limited English Proficient (LEP) person.

    C. Impartiality
The interpreter shall be impartial and unbiased and shall refrain from conduct that may give an
appearance of bias. The interpreter shall not allow personal opinions to interfere with his/her
duties nor add unsolicited comments or make recommendations except to assist
    communication.

    D. Transparency
All messages conveyed by any party, including the interpreter, shall be rendered in the other
language, so that everything conveyed can be communicated and understood by anyone present,
regardless of the language in which it was conveyed.

    E. Conflict of Interest
The interpreter shall disclose any real or perceived conflict of interest. Interpreters shall not take
personal advantage, financial or otherwise, of information obtained in the course of their work.

    F. Scope of Practice
The interpreter shall be limited to interpreting only. While performing his/her professional
duties, the interpreter shall not give advice, express personal opinions, or otherwise be
construed to provide a service other than interpreting.

    G. Disqualification and Impediments to Performance
The interpreter shall, at all times, assess his/her ability to maintain LanguageLine Onsite’s
highest standards for professional interpretation. An interpreter shall immediately convey any
reservations about their ability to successfully complete the assignment for the customer. The
interpreter shall decline any assignment believed to be beyond his/her technical knowledge or
    linguistic ability.

    H. Authority
The interpreter shall only interpret for the language(s) authorized by LanguageLine Onsite.
