Onion Leeks ( Allium ampeloprasum )
Introduction
Leeks (Allium ampeloprasum) are members of the Alliaceae family. Other members of the
family include onion and garlic. The leek plant is a robust herbaceous biennial that has been
cultivated for centuries but has not been found wild. Leek plants resemble large onion plants
with flat leaves. Unlike onion and garlic, leeks do not form bulbs or produce cloves. Originally
from central Asia, it has been consumed since ancient times. It was on the menu of the Egyptians
and later the Romans, pioneers of gastronomy, used it plentifully in their cuisine, especially
during their great feasts. They have a sweet and garlicky flavor. They also offer many health
benefits, including aiding in weight loss, protecting against cancer, and supporting healthy brain
function. Leeks and wild ramps boast a variety of nutrients and beneficial compounds that may
improve your digestion, reduce inflammation, fight heart disease, and combat cancer. In
addition, they may lower blood sugar levels, protect your brain, and fight infections.
Review of Related Literature
Onion (Allium cepa) and leek (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum) are common herbs and
vegetables found in our daily life. It belongs to the genus Allium, which is usually known for
their high antioxidant and anticancer properties. Medical researchers highly recommend the
exploitation of herbs and plants as alternative ways in the treatment of cancer ( Zamri Hamid,
2019) Leek (Allium ampeloprasum) is believed to have anti hepatotoxic and anti fungal
activities. Allium species are considered rich sources of secondary metabolitics including
phenolic acids and their derivatives, flavonoids and flavonoids polymers which have significant
health benefits . The medicinal property of Allium ampeloprasum is mainly due to the presence
of many sulfur containing bioactive constituents such as dimethyl disulfide, methyl propenyl
disulfide, propyl propenyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, methyl propyl trisulfide, methyl
propenyl trisulfide, S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide, S-propyl cysteine sulfoxide, S-propenyl
cysteine sulfoxide and N-(γ-glutamyl)-S-(E-1-propenyl) cysteine.32 Allium ampeloprasum has
higher amount of methiin and propiin, ( Pharmacogn, 2021)
