                                           Galvanized Sheet
                                           metal
1.Sheet Metal
You want to cut out 4, 3.5 in by 3.5
inches cubes out of galvanized sheet
metal supplied by your teacher. The
sheet metal is galvanized which mean
it is coated in Copper making It
unable to rust making it a perfect
material to make the rose out of so it
does keep its original beautiful shape.
Once you have received your sheet
metal to cut it Make sure you have
your safety equipment on and adjust
the blocker on the back side to 3.5 Metal Shear to cut the
inches. Make sure the end of the
sheet metal is against the blocker so it sheet metal with:
will turn out properly and the right
size. Use your foot to push the foot
lever down and repeat four times
until you get your cubes.
2.Engraving and
Marking Cut Lines
Once you have your squares you
want to make sure you use the
engraver to mark your name on
them, so that way they don’t get
lost, stolen or mixed up. Make
sure you are wearing hearing
protection whilst engraving!
Afterwards you can start making
the sheet metal into a circle to
then make your cut lines for the
petals.
                                        To make it easier use
                                        a turned tin snip if
                                        you are right-handed
                                        the left turned tin
snips ( yellow ) will be
Cutting the Circles easier!
Once you have successfully marked
out your 3.5-inch circle you may
being to cut it out. When
proceeding to cut it out make sure
you are properly equipped with
gloves and eye protection to make
sure no small pieces of metal go
into your eye. Once prepared get a
pair of tin snips and begin to slowly
cut out the circles. Although it may
seem hard it first you will slowly
adapt and get used to it.
Filing
After you have cut out your circles
you may seem to find that they are
a bit misshapen and rough. By using
a vice to clamp in your circle , make
sure you are filing at a 45-degree
angle on the surface of the
material, not to mention you can
only file one way which is away
from you otherwise, the file will not
function as intended. Finally, repeat
this for all your circles and all the
sides. Make sure to wear safety
gloves and googles and hearing
protection so that way you can
operate the tool with no injuries.
Center Punching the
pedal
To drill the hole for your stem you
must find the center of your circles.
In order to do so, you must find a
table and place the circle on the
corner of the table and grab a ruler.
Use the ruler and table’s 45 degree
angle and make a straight line
through the circle with a scribe.
Then repeat, the process and make
two lines on opposite sides to find
the center.
Center Punching
the Circles
Now that you have found your
center punch lines now it is time to
punch them in. Grab a hammer and
a center punch, place your circle on
the anvil, line up the center punch
and make one strong hit ( not
multiple weak ones ). The reason
why to center punch is that so your
drill bit will not skid off the center
while drilling and will stay in place.
Cutting the Petals
Mark 8 equally sized petals on your
circles with a scribe. Once all petals
have been marked begin to grab
your safety equipment. Make sure
to wear gloves and eye protection.
Grab a pair of straight tin snips and
begin cutting the petals making sure
to leave around 1 centimeter from
the center punch area.
Drilling Holes
Now that you have your center hole
punched and marked it is time to
drill your holes. Using a 1/8 drill bit
in the drill begin drilling with the
drill bit spinning towards the right.
Make sure you have safety
equipment on such as hearing
protection and eye protection. Not
to mention that make sure you have
properly clamped your petals with a
clamp to keep your hands out of the
way of the drill bit.
Curving the Petals
Once you have completed the
previous steps you need to grab a
ball peen hammer and a wooden
mold to curve the Petals into a
bowl. Start off by grabbing safety
equipment such as eye and hearing
protection as well as safety gloves.
Make sure to use caution and use
the round side of the hammer and
hammer your Petals in making them
curve into the shape of the mold.
Detailing the
Petals
After completing all previous steps,
you need to detail all the Petals. To
start off I started with rounding off
the edges on the Petals with a left
turned pair of tin snips. Make sure
you are wearing eye and hearing
protection and safety gloves for all
the detailing steps. Next grab a
chipping ( welding ) hammer and
take your Petals to a vice. Use the
part of the vice where the vice
clamps and metal structure of the
vice meet to detail and curve your
Petals.
                                            After all steps
                                            are
                                            completed
                                            make sure to
Cutting the Star drill your
Once you are ready request a piece of holes for your
metal from your teacher. Begin to draw stem by using
a large star with five points. Make sure a 1/8th drill
you can clearly identify and see the star bit.
so what it is easier when you cut. Make
sure to where eye protection and safety
gloves when cutting. Use a pair of
straight tin snips to go around your star
and cut it out. Not to mention after
finishing previous steps you will want to
determine the center point of your star
and center punch it with a center
punch. At the end you would want to
use a vice and some pliers to bend the
arms of the star inwards.
The Stem
After you have finished up the star
proceed to making your stem. Ask
your teacher for a piece of welding
rod. Cut it 12 inches long and don’t
forget to hold it from both ends
when walking around with it to
make sure you don’t poke anyone.
Assembly of the
Rose
Once you have completed all previous
steps now it is time to being putting
together your rose. Start by choosing a
side on your stem and making a loop so
when you put your Petals on they will
stay in place. Make sure you have eye
protection and safety gloves through
this process. You will want to make the
loop with pliers. It is better to make the
loop smaller so that your Petals will stay
more to the center. After you have
made the loop and put on your star and
petals being to bend the top part of the
stem sticking out. This way you can
place the first curved petal around it to
create a stable base. Make sure you
also loop the top part of the stem that
sticks out after you put your pieces on
the stem.
Bending the Petals
Once completed previous steps it is now
time for the rose to take shape. Start by
bringing one pedal from the top section
into the middle. Make sure you make
this first section tight! Your first pedal
should be rolled up on itself like a
burrito. Slowly begin bringing in other
Petals and start bending them around
the already bent pedal. One by one
your rose will start taking shape. Make
sure to wear safety gloves and eye
protection when doing this step. Also
once all steps are done begin to turn
the edges of the petals outwards to give
it more of a natural look
Making the Leaves
Once you are done crafting and assembling
the rose it is now time to make your leaves.
To do so get a big enough piece of sheet
metal ( like the metal you used to make your
petals). Try to trace the leaves in the rough
shape of a tear drop. Then using a straight
pair of tin snips begin cutting along your
mark. Making sure you have safety gloves
and eye protection on during this procedure.
Then proceed to get a chipper and a hammer
and sort of make the “veins” of the leaf.
Make sure you are wearing hearing
protection!
Sand Blasting
Once you have your petals looking like a
rose it is time to sandblast. To do so get
permission from your teacher first.
Make sure you are wearing your hearing
protection first. Begin off by opening
the side of the sand blaster and
attaching your rose to a pair of vice
grips. Place your rose in the sand
blaster, then switch on the air valve on
your left side when facing the
sandblaster. Then switch on the
sandblaster and use the foot pedal to
spray the sand. Make sure you get all
the sides and crevices of the rose. This
will make sure any lines you have
accidentally made during measurement
come off.
