Core competency reflection
Personal awareness and responsibility
Strengths:
1. “I am learning to take care of self.”
Over the past year with school and life I have learned that taking care of myself contributes to my mood,
and mental health. This may not sound important but having a good mood and a positive mindset gives
me the motivation to do my work and get things done. Some of the ways I can help myself is by keeping
my room clean, making sure I always eat enough, and doing what makes me feel comfortable and
confident.
2. “I understand that my decisions and actions affect me.”
These past few school weeks I received a very heavy load with having math and science in the same
semester, two subjects which I have majorly struggled with in the past. Working 16 hours a week, taking
my national lifeguard course for 8 hours every Sunday, which also gives me homework. Overall, the
decision to take all this on has taken effect on me and left me a little stressed. However, I am
overcoming it and getting used to my new routine.
Weakness:
1. “I understand learning takes patience and time.”
Often when I do not understand something immediately, or something is really challenging for me to
comprehend, I get unmotivated and feel like I will not be able to get it. This can lead me to fall behind in
my schoolwork and can stress me out even when I am not focusing on school. I understand that I can ask
my teachers and friends for help when I do not understand certain things, and that could remove this
stress.
Social responsibility:
Strengths:
1. “I can identify and appreciate different perspectives on issues and use and evaluate strategies to
resolve problems.”
I enjoy hearing others' ideas and opinions on things. When I listen to what people have to say I always
listen with an open mind which allows their ideas and opinions to influence the way I may think on
certain problems. When problems occur, I can calmly try and talk through the matter with the other
person and try to mutually produce a solution to our conflict.
2. “I value diversity, defend human rights, advocate for others, and act ethically in all my interactions,
including online.”
I have always valued other people's cultures and enjoy the way diverse cultures have shaped Vancouver
into the inclusive and diverse city that it is. When someone says something inappropriate to others, I
always try my best to step in and tell them what they are doing and saying is wrong.
Weakness:
1. “I am aware of my community and environment and work independently and collaboratively for
the benefit of others.”
Sometimes I have a challenging time thinking about all the other groups in the community and even just
others in general. When I choose to do certain things, I choose them for myself as something that I will
do to make myself happy. I also do not do much that contributes to the community, so I have not
experienced having to work with others to benefit people in my community.
Critical thinking
Strengths:
1. “I can analyze and critique my work and my learning.”
I always critique my own work by rereading it multiple times. I also usually ask others to look over it and
ask for feedback wondering if there is anything else I can improve on. I can analyze my learning by taking
notes and reading over them to try and grasp a further understanding of certain topics and concepts.
2. “I can ask good quality questions, gather relevant information and produce well-developed
conclusions.”
In my life guarding courses if something comes up that I do not fully understand or do not know how to
do I always ask questions to help me better understand. When there is something, I can improve on, I
also watch others to see what they may do well and pick apart the things they may have missed or did
wrong and make sure I do them right when it is my turn.
Weakness:
1. “I understand the purpose for my work and consider my audience.”
Usually when I do work, I get caught up in it and write it as something coming from me for someone like
me who has experienced the same things and can relate to my thoughts. However, this is not always the
case for how things always need to be done. When I do my work, I should always reread it and check to
see that it is suitable for the audience it is being created for.
Creative thinking:
Strengths:
1. “I can use the environment around me, including others, and my unconscious mind to generate
new ideas.”
When it comes to creating new ideas for certain things, I often find it helpful to have someone to talk to
about what I need to produce. Someone to bounce ideas off of and someone that can contribute by
building off my ideas. Sometimes even random things will spark new thoughts and ideas.
2. “I can take my ideas evaluate, develop, and refine them to make something productive out of
them.”
When I produce new ideas, it always takes me a little while to work out all the flaws, I always find it
useful to talk about them with someone else. However, I can think about them by myself, and they are
still good ideas. Usually when I am writing something for English, I think through what I want to write
and can come up with ideas for what I want to write and think them through from begging to end by
myself.
Weakness:
1. “I can preserve and understand that failure can be productive.”
It usually really upsets me to fail something especially something I am passionate about. It leaves me
feeling unintelligent and like I will not ever be able to understand the class I am in or what I am
supposed to be doing. However, I need to get over it and look at what areas I struggle in so that I can do
better the next time.
Communication:
Strengths:
1. “I can listen, learn to contribute meaningfully to discussion and debate, consider different
perspectives, and build consensus.”
I can listen to others and contribute to the conversation being had. I can contribute with my own ideas
and try to build off others'. I enjoy listening to other people's perspectives because they can usually
bring up a different side to a conversation that I may have never considered before. I can discuss all the
points brought up in debates and come to an agreement with the rest of my group.
2. “I can reflect on the process of learning and share what I have learned.”
When writing up reflections for schoolwork I can always look back on what I learned over the past unit
and understand why it was important for me to learn these things. I can express what I learned and how
it may have changed my thoughts on certain subjects. I can also understand how learning certain things
betters me as a person.
Weakness:
1. “I can engage in deep and meaningful inquiry for a variety of purposes and audiences.”
When I do research, I often have a challenging time finding the proper things I am looking for. When I
express my learning and what I have researched, I usually struggle to remember my audience and all the
extra background information needed to fully understand the concept.
Personal and cultural identity:
Strengths:
1. “I understand what is important to me.”
Personally, I try and hold what I love close. To me it is more important that I do what I feel is right for me
instead of just doing what others tell me to do. I believe doing what you love and being true to yourself
is the most important part of existing.
2. “I understand how what I value will shape my choices.”
I understand this well because I value my own well-being. This value can often cause me to go out of my
way and protect myself from getting hurt by others. It also allows me to follow my own thoughts and do
what I want to do and not do what others want for me.
Weakness:
1. I understand that culture is a broad concept that includes things like my geographic region
nationality, sex/gender, age, ethnicity, sexuality, language, and religion.
I have been able to see other people's cultures through movies and shows. I have been able to
experience certain aspects of indigenous culture in B.C. by traveling and visiting different museums and
talking to people about it. However, I have never understood my own culture or if I even have a culture
with being a mix of so many different cultures and nationalities.
