1ST Quarter
Module 1: Knowing and Understanding Oneself during Middle and Late Adolescence
SELF- CONCEPT
• Ideal Self- the self you aspire to be
• Actual Self- the self that you actually see
• Actual Self- it is built on self- knowledge
• Self- concept- refers to awareness of yourself.
• Self- knowledge- derived from social interactions that provide insight into how others react
to you.
• Negotiation- exists between the two selves which is complex because there are numerous
exchanges between the ideal and actual self.
• Incongruence- the actual self is not aligned to the ideal self, which would cause mental
distress or anxiety
• Alignment- the actual self is aligned to the ideal self, it would make a person feel a sense of
mental well- being or peace of mind.
PERSONAL EEFFECTIVENESS
• Personal Effectiveness- making use of all personal resources- talents, skills, energy, and time,
to enable to achieve life goals.
• Experience- includes knowledge and skills that we acquire in the process of cognitive and
practical activities.
• Knowledge- is required for setting goals, defining an action plan to achieve them and risk
assessment.
• Skills- determine whether real actions are performed in accordance with the plan.
• SKILLS that will increase efficiency of any person who owns them:
Determination, Self- Confidence, Persistence, Managing Stress, Problem- Solving Skills,
Creativity, Generating Ideas
3 Kinds of People:
✓ Movigoer- this person watches the movie of their lives, admires some parts and criticize
others.
✓ Actor- does not only watch the movie of her life, she can control a big part of her life.
✓ Scriptwriter- does not only watch, doesn’t only act, but she actually creates the entire movie
from her mind.
Module 2: Developing the Whole Person
Aspects of your Development
1. Physical Self- physical assessment of oneself
2. Intellectual Self- how well you reason and solve problems, specific areas of knowledge, etc.
3. Emotional Self- typical feelings you have, feelings which are associated with each other, etc.
4. Sensual Self- senses you use most
5. Interactional Self- descriptions of your strengths and weaknesses in relationships.
6. Nutritional Self- nourishment of the body
7. Contextual Self- areas of maintenance of your living environment
8. Spiritual Self- feelings about yourself and organized religion, reactions about your spiritual
connections to others, etc.
Module 6: The Powers of the mind
3 major parts of the BRAIN
o Cerebrum
o Cerebellum- controls voluntary movements
o Brain Stem- controls functions that keep people alive such as breathing, heart rate, blood
pressure, and food digestion.
• Neurons- the basic functional units of the nervous system, three-part units and are key to
brain function.
Module 7: Mental Health and Well- Being in Middle- Late Adolescence
SELF ESTEEM AND BODY ESTEEM
• Self Esteem- is all about how much you feel, you are worth, and how much you feel other
people value you.
• Body Image- is how you view your physical self- including whether you feel attractive and
whether others like your looks.
Common Eating Disorders
1. Anorexia- have a real fear of weight gain and a distorted view of their body size and
shape.
2. Bulimia- similar to anorexia, people might binge eat and then try to compensate in
extreme ways such as making themselves throw up or exercising all the time, to prevent
weight gains
Module 8: Emotional Intelligence
• Emotional Intelligence- is the ability to understand, use, and manage our emotions. It may
refer to EQ or EI.
Types of Responses
a. Passive Response- behaving passively means not expressing your own needs and feelings, or
expressing them so weakly that they will not be addressed.
b. Aggressive Response- behaving aggressively is asking for what you want or saying how you
feel in a threatening or humiliating way that may offend the other person/s
c. Assertive Response- behaving assertively means asking for what you want or saying how you
feel in an honest and respectful way that does not infringe on another person’s rights or put
the individual down.
