Grammar Translation Method

The Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a foreign language teaching methodology derived from classical methods used to teach Latin and Greek. It relies on reading texts and translating words and phrases directly between the first and second languages. In GTM classrooms, teachers introduce grammar rules and have students practice translation exercises to build vocabulary and grammar skills through memorization. While it focuses heavily on grammar and translation practice, GTM provides a strong foundation in reading, writing, and translating but can be a passive learning style if used exclusively. Grammar Translation Method

According to agustina lestary Grammar Translation Method GTM) is a foreign language


teaching methodology derived from classical methods (sometimes called traditional) method in
teaching Greek and Latin. In this method, the teachers usually have the students to translate
whole texts word for word and memorize grammatical rules and exceptions as well as sets of
words. This method relies on the activity of reading and translating text. According to Denita
febri nifsian GTM is a method of combining Grammar and Translation activities or methods

But in my opinion , Grammar translation method is The learning method combines


translation learning and grammar learning, which is usually used for foreign language learning,
and students will be trained to translate L1 to L2 using the correct grammar.

Grammar translation method is not something new in language, Grammar translation


method has existed since 1840s-1940s, only slightly different in name, Grammar translation
method in ancient times was called "classical method" which at that time was used in classical
languages such as Latin and Greek which functioned to help students learn and understand
foreign language literature.

How to apply GTM in classroom ?

- Learning start from intoduce part of speech , simple grammar to students,how to


combine word to be correct sentence
- And then teacher ask the student to translate some text from L1 to L2 or L2 to L1
with the correct grammar that they learned
- And makesure there is evaluation in learning that the teacher check and give feedback
to the task that have made by students
Because this method more emphasize students to know about translate , how to
translate with correct grammar and that’s why the GTM learning in classroom just
learn about grammar and try to translate some sentence or text .
This method look like little bored for active student as we know the rule in this
method just learn grammar and practice to translate without communication this is
something like passif activity, but this is method can be important sometime. Because
it can develop students' skills to read, write and translate English texts ,
forms a strong memory of students because they usually connect words -English
words in their memory.But this is can be bored method if students always used this
method to learn it will be better to combine method in learning activity.
