Grammar Translation Method (GTM)

Definition:
The Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a traditional method of teaching foreign languages that
focuses on learning grammar rules and translating sentences between the target language and the
students’ native language. It emphasizes reading and writing rather than speaking or listening.

Key Features:
• Heavy use of translation (from native language to target language and vice versa).
• Memorization of grammar rules and vocabulary lists.
• Focus on written texts (literary works, passages).
• Accuracy and correctness are more important than fluency.
• Little attention is given to speaking or communication.

Examples of GTM in the Classroom:


• The teacher gives a list of vocabulary words in English with their equivalent meanings in
Filipino/Spanish, and students memorize them.
• Students are asked to translate the sentence: The boy is reading a book → El niño está
leyendo un libro.
• Teacher explains the grammar rule for forming past tense verbs, then asks students to apply it
by translating sentences like: She walked to school yesterday.
• Students read a short passage in the target language, then translate it into their native
language word for word.
