Simple Past tense


Definition:
The simple past test is a verb form used to refer to an
action or series of actions that were completed in the past.
Time of use :
you are talking about something that has already happened
Rules:
(1)Simple or affirmative sentences
Subject + verb 2 form +object
Examples
 Lisa went to the supermarket yesterday.
 Sam cooked a tasty dinner yesterday.
 My brother saw a movie yesterday.
 Last year, I travelled to France.
 I washed the dishes.
 My mother bought a dress for me.
(2)negative sentences
Subject +did not /didn’t +verb 1st form + object.
Examples
 I didn't play football yesterday.
 They didn't go to the theater last month.
 She didn't arrive on time this morning.
 You didn't eat my toast.
(3) Interrogative
Did +subject + verb 1st form + object+?
Example
 Did you have fun with your friends yesterday?
 Where did she go for her last holiday?
 What did they watch on TV last night?
 Did you speak really well?
 Did I have my breakfast?

(4)interrogative negative
Did + subject + not + V1 + object+?

Examples
 Didn't you speak really well?
 Didn't I have my breakfast?
 Don't you go to school yet ? .
 Doesn't it feel good to be nice to poor people ?
 Won't you come in the party tonight ?
 Weren't you present in the meeting yesterday ?

Simple sentences
1We took him to the hospital. ‫ہم اسے ہسپتال لے گئے ۔‬
2. He came to me yesterday. ‫وہ کل مجھے ملنے آیا۔‬
3. I punished him. ‫میں نے اسے سزا دی۔‬
4. He met with my friend. ‫وہ میرے دوست سے مال۔‬

Negative sentences
1. We did not take him to the hospital. ‫ہم اسے ہسپتال نہیں لے گئے ۔‬
2. He did not come to me yesterday. ‫وہ کل مجھ سے ملنے نہیں آیا۔‬
3. I did not punish him. ‫میں نے اسے سزا نہیں دی۔‬
4. He did not meet my friend. ‫وہ میرے دوست سے نہیں مال۔‬

I Interrogative sentences

1. Did we take him to the hospital? ‫کیا ہم اسے ہسپتال لے گئے ؟‬

Past continuous tense


Definition:
Past Continuous Tense is a tense which is used to indicate a continuing
action or event that was happening at some point in time in the past.
Time of use
to talk about an action that used to be done frequently in the past but is not
done in the present

 Rules
(1) Simple or affirmative sentences
Subject + was/were+ 1st verb +ing+ object.
Examples

 It was snowing yesterday.


 They were eating at the restaurant.
 You were working yesterday.
 I was studying last night.
(2) Negative sentences
Subject +was /were +not+ past participial (verb 1st +ing) +object+.
Examples
 I was not listening to the news.
 You were not doing it again.
 He was not driving a car.
 It was not raining when you came.
(3) Interrogative sentences
Was/were + subject + present participle (verb+ing) + object +?
Examples
 Was I listening to the news?
 Were you doing it again?
 Was he driving a car?
 Was it raining when you came?
(4) Negative Interrogative
Was/were + subject + not + present participle (verb+ing)+object +?
Or
Wasn’t/weren’t + subject + present participle (verb+ing)+ object +?

Simple
‫میں ایک کتاب پڑھ رہا تھا۔‬ I was reading a book.
‫ہم ٹیلیوژن پر ایک مووی دیکھ‬
We were watching a movie on television.
‫رہے تھے۔‬

‫تم بہت تیز دوڑ رہے تھے۔‬ You were running very fast.

‫وہ ایک پتنگ ُاڑا رہا تھا۔‬ He was flying a kite.

Negative sentences

‫یں ایک قریبی گاؤں میں نہیں رہ‬


I was not residing in a nearby town.
‫رہا تھا۔‬

‫ہم کھانا نہیں کھا رہے تھے۔‬ We were not eating meal.

‫تم ایک ریڈیو کمینٹری نہیں سن‬


You were not listening a radio commentary.
‫رہے تھے۔‬

‫وہ ڈاکٹر کا انتظار نہیں کر رہا تھا۔‬ He was not waiting for the doctor.

Interrogative sentences

‫کیا وہ اپنے بچوں کو کہانی سنا‬


Was she telling story to her children?
‫رہی تھی؟‬
‫کیا ہوا شمال سے جنوب کی‬
