BWAKAW is a 2012 Philippine comedy drama film written and
directed by Jun Lana. Eddie Garcia stars as a lonely gay man in his 70s who cares for
a stray dog he named Bwakaw. The film was first screened as part of the
2012 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival where it formed part of the
Director's Showcase roster. A Philippine movie about a grumpy, old, gay man and his
faithful dog has become an unlikely hit abroad while shaking the belief that local
independent films have to focus on the darker side of life. One of the finest movies
about old age and its contradictions, Bwakaw is also one of the best by director Jun
Robles Lana and his main actor, Eddie Garcia (who was 82 at the time). It won many
awards at the Cinemalaya Festival in 2012, and was shown in several festivals abroad.
Bwakaw won the Netpac Awards and the Audience Choice during the Cinemalaya
competition, while Garcia was awarded Best Actor.[3] The film was selected as the
Filipino entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but
it did not make the final shortlist. The film Bwakaw named after the dog in the movie
is the Philippines’ submission for an Academy Award for best foreign film. While
standing little chance of being shortlisted, its heartwarming story is winning rave
reviews overseas.
"Bwakaw" may seem to be a simple look into the life of an old,
gay, grumpy man but at its core is a story that has a lot to offer beyond its initial
offering and setup. It may not be obvious at first glance but this is a very rewarding
experience overall. It tells the story of Rene, 70, a villager who only recently realized
he was homosexual. Embittered and lonely, he looks forward to his death, only to
have Bwakaw, the dog, teach him the value of life. In the story of Bwakaw has a lot
message such as a self-acceptance and found a new appreciation for life and what is
most important. "Bwakaw" may feel like its plot and story is too simple but actually
that is the reason why this film was an outstanding experience in our opinion. It
doesn’t have the excess baggage that a typical mainstream film may consider a must
to entertain audiences. And given its simplicity, the film came out much more
authentic, real, and approachable. Watching the movie, you will definitely feel that
everyone will go through this stage. Growing old is inevitable, but its always
important to have the people you love with you. It also wouldn't hurt if that someone
who cares for you is the man's best friend. After all, its the connection that matters.
This film was a good example of an indie film the production is quite not good just
like in the mainstream film. However, even though the film is not good quality but the
movie shows many messages to audiences. Bwakaw is also a good example of indie
film because mostly the characters are not known or not popular of the year that the
film release.
