MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF SIDHARTA AUCTIONEER
Welcome to Sidharta Auctioneer Asian Modern Fine Art & Collectibles auction of September
edition, highlighting Women on Canvas. For centuries, women have always been the subject
of numerous artworks and master pieces until much later female artists begun to emerge
and the number has been increasing over the time. Today, more women appear to involve
in art in many forms; as artistic expressions, patron, collectors, sources of inspiration indeed,
contributors, art historians and critics. In conjunction with that, we are featuring their
engagement in this auction. Let’s not to exclude, alongside with these subjects of women, we
also bring in sculptures by Sunaryo, Circle of Life by Redy Rahadian, Birth by Basrizal Albara
and Salted Fish by Ibnu Nurwanto
On women on canvas, we are presenting five Indonesian woman artists who have been
productive in our time are Erica Hestu Wahyuni, Bunga Jeruk Permata Pekerti, Maria Tjui, Sri
Yunnah and Lucia Hartini. Others paintings that have been inspired by women around them
and created by renown artists are as follows, Srihadi Soedarsono, Barli Sasmitawinata, Mochtar
Apin, Nyoman Gunarsa, Antonio Blanco, Agus Suwage, Suyatna, Faizin, Pande Ketut Taman,
Huang Fong, Jeihan Sukmantoro, I Wayan Pengsong, and S. P. Hidayat.
You may also want to look at our curated collectible antiques lot 1023 Peranakan Chinese-
style hexagonal carved gilt sweet vegetable rack with stand, lot 1027 19th - early 20th century

1038 Rusli became intrigued by Santiniketan from a very early
age, after reading a magazine article about Rabindranath
Rusli Tagore’s visit to Indonesia. It mentioned how classes
(Medan, N. Sumatra, 1916 - 2005)
at the open university of Santiniketan were held not in
the confinements of a chamber, but under the trees in
Pohon-pohon (Trees) the nature. The article mentioned that Santiniketan was
an open university, without a classroom. It was in-line
1975 with his search for freedom. Rusli spent six years there,
oil on canvas
60 x 50 cm between 1932 and 1938.
Rusli established his own distinct style which was in many
ways more daring in its simplicity than his world famous
signed and dated (upper left): “Rusli 9 Aug ‘75”
colleague. In his paintings, Rusli strips his subjects to
the bare essence of their matter, into simple bands,
Rp. 28 - 42.000.000 strokes or even dots of color. Tempo journalist Bambang
Bujono even likened Rusli’s works to haiku poems
US$ 1.867 - 2.800 executed in lines and color. Some of Rusli’s works
primarily consist of linear elements. The shape of his
subjects are delineated using broad, bold lines or planes
of color. “What I paint is actually not the object, not its
physical entity, but rather its spirit,” the artist claimed.
52 The painter’s works are his search for the essence in art.

Agus Djaya As a painter, Agus Djaya thought of how to
(Banten, W. Java, 1913 - Bogor, W. Java, 1994)
continue the great Indonesian visual tradition
of the past with the new, and borrowed from the
reliefs of the Borobudur and Prambanan temples.
Teaching Children In this painting, he depicted a man teaching
1974 children the art of drawing and writing on lontar

borrow this scene from the reliefs of the Javanese
