1.1c Empowered Learner- Students use
technology to seek feedback that informs Students should be able to identify
and improves their practice and to President’s Day and describe some
demonstrate their learning in a variety of presidents that have been in office
ways. and our current president. By the end
of this lesson, they will create a class
digital shared writing of which
president they would like to meet.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
The students’ learning goal is to explain the importance of a President’s role and be able to
give a fact about one of the three President’s that were talked about. Then, the students
should be able to create their own slide on a PowerPoint to give a quick shared writing story
of which president they want to meet.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.
☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.
Lesson idea implementation:
This presentation will start off as a whole group lesson. After the digital story is done, we will
open discussion about what we have been learning about Presidents and President’s Day. I
will ask the students what they would like to be when they grow up and what rules need to
be met in order to become what they want to be. After the students finish discussing with a
partner, I will then ask a new question. The new question will be which president would you
like to meet: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or Joe Biden. Based on their answers, I
will split them up into group depending on which president they want to meet. To make
students aware of what is expected, I will model a PowerPoint slide of my expectations. I will
also have their names on the board, sentence starters, and make every group come to me
once they think they are finished. I will walk around if the students need any help writing
their fact, and the students will each have a PowerPoint slide to give their presentation on.
Feedback will be provided through the meeting with me and their slides will be used as an
assessment. To conclude the lesson, I will talk to the students as a whole group on the carpet
about the importance and influence of presidents in the United States.
Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
This BPT gets students to be actively involved in authentic tasks because they are able to hear
the digital story book instead of reading it because they aren’t necessarily at that level yet. It
is engaging for them as well because they have voice and choice in deciding which president
they would like to meet. To manage behaviors, I will express clear expectations of everyone. I

will also walk around to make sure that everyone is on task. The assignment uses
collaboration because the students will be put in groups and working together on the
computer to create their slide. Finally, the product that is created is engaging for the students
because they will get to present their creations.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The activity and technology tool I used supports and enhances the learning experience for all
students because it gives multiple ways of getting the information. For example, the students
can hear the story, read the story, have the story translated, etc. According to the UDL
framework, engagement is meet through voice and choice of each student because they get
to decide which president they would like to meet. Engagement is also met through the use
of technology which Kindergartners don’t get a lot of. They will be able to share the artifact
that they created and present it in class.
Reflecting on enhanced learning:
I feel as though the activity that I created will impact student learning because it gives them
an insight into government which they will get deeper knowledge of as they get older. The
part of the lesson that I look forward to the most with my students will be when they voice
their opinions and choose who they want to meet because everybody’s choice and reason
behind it will be different.
