Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For my ESL students in my classroom, the use of visuals (images, videos, and anchor charts) to enhance their
learning experience in order for them to learn the material in a more accessible way. This video is accessible at
home for parents to practice and show them the video and learn alongside their child about Abraham Lincoln. In

the classroom, there are several laptops that can be used by the students to access the video and watch and learn
at their own pace and in their own individual learning space.
Lesson idea implementation:

The BrainPOP video will be used to introduce a study on Abraham Lincoln. Students will be introduced to the
works of Abraham Lincoln and his legacy. Afterwards, students will be instructed to do a sequencing activity and
picture sort about Abraham Lincoln and the story, Lincoln’s Hat. The students will create a piece about Abraham
Lincoln and their favorite things about him after the several introduction strategies that inform students about his
life.

Students will have the choice of completing their story about Abraham Lincoln using a camera (in the technology
lab), Productivity Tools (with the help of the technology teacher), creating a play or by simply writing a story
using pictures and words. Students will do an interactive activity with a Lincoln’s Hat craft in which they will
make real-life connections as they imagine what they will put in “their hat.” Students will practice their writing
skills and blending sounds to draft their words and sentences. A rubric will be used to evaluate students’
sequencing, retelling, and understanding of the artifacts related to Abraham Lincoln.

Reflective Practice:

Extending this project might involve publishing the student work on the school or classroom blog. Students could
present the play, video, and products that were created using their technology of choice on the morning news. In
addition, since students and their parents are using ClassDojo, my phone could be used to taking pictures and
videos while students are working and uploading those and the final products onto ClassDojo or the class/school
website!
