Pattern Details

Size:
12 inches from bottom of fin to top of head with weight 4 yarn and a 3.25 mm hook

Skill Level Needed:


Intermediate- suitable for novice crocheters, requires patience and precisions when assembling
the fish and basic crochet skills.

Materials Needed:
Yarn: Worsted Weight #4, approximately 150g of main color, approximately 50g of accent color
Color A: Solid Color of Choice, Color B: Variegated Color of Choice, C: Mint, D: Pink
Hook Size: D Hook or 3.25 mm
30 mm galaxy eyes(can be purchased at Sun Catcher Craft Eyes)
Scissors, sewing needle, stitch marker, fiberfill stuffing

Abbreviations:
mr= magic ring- crochet single crochet stitches in to the
adjustable loop BLO= back loops only
ch= chain stitch inc3= 3 sc in the same stitch
sc= single crochet stitch F/O= fasten off
sl= slip stitch
dc= double crochet stitch
inc= increase- make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch
dec=decrease- crochet two stitches together using the decrease method
(4 sc, inc) x 6= repeat the pattern between parentheses 6 times

Notes:
• Do not join rounds unless stated, work in a continuous spiral
• Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round
• All stitches are worked in both loops unless stated otherwise in the pattern

Head and Body:
Lips(Make 2):
With Color D:
1. Make 6 sc into a magic ring= 6
2. Increase in each st around= 12
Do not F/O 2nd piece.
Place both pieces together to look like a figure 8.
Make 3 sc on both pieces to connect them together.
Start crocheting 9 sc on the 1st lip. Make 9 more sc around the 2nd lip. (Ignore the 3 sc you used
to connect the lips)= 18

Continuing with the body:
Change to Color A:
1. sc in each st around
2. (sc, inc) x 6= 18
3. sc in each st around
4. (2 sc, inc) x 6= 24
5. sc in each st around
6. (3 sc, inc) x 6= 30
7. sc in each st around with an additional 2 sc= 32

8. (2 sc, inc) x 6, 12 sc= 36


9. (3 sc, inc) x 6, 12 sc= 42
10. (4 sc, inc) x 6, 12 sc= 48
11. (5 sc, inc) x 6, 12 sc= 54
12. (6 sc, inc) x 6, 12 sc= 60
(place a stitch marker in between stitch 4 and 5 of row 15. Place a 2nd stitch marker 32 stitches
away from the 1st stitch marker. This is to mark where your eyes should go. This is an
approximate point. You may need to adjust once you start the decreasing rows.)
13-27. sc in each st around (Change Color on Row 20 to Color B)
Stuff the whale as you work. Place eyes between rows 15 and 16, leaving 32 holes in between
them. You might have to adjust placement after row 30. Make sure you look at the eyes and
see how they look. If you want the sunken eye look, do not place the backs until row 33.
28. 18 sc, (dec, 8 sc) x 3, dec, 10 sc= 56
29. 17 sc, (dec, 7 sc) x 3, dec, 10 sc= 52
30. 16 sc, (dec, 6 sc) x 3, dec, 10 sc= 48
31. 15 sc, (dec, 5 sc) x 3, dec, 10 sc= 44
32. 14 sc, (dec, 4 sc) x 3, dec, 10 sc= 40
33. 13 sc, (dec, 3 sc) x 3, dec, 10 sc= 36
Now for the eyes. Stuff the head well. Place the eyelashes inside the eye along the edge. Cut a
long piece of yarn and remove the eyes. Place the needle in the hole where the first eye was
and thread the needle into a hole next to the eye

Body Continued:
hole. Go back and forth between each eye hole repeating the process from the first eye. Pull
slightly on the yarn after going through each hole. Do this about 3 times on each side until you
reach the look you want. Follow the pictures for help. There is also a youtube video I have for

To place the backs of the eyes you will need to remove most of the stuffing to place the
washers on the eyes then re stuff it.

35. (3 sc, dec) x 6= 24
36-37. sc in each st around
38. (2 sc, dec) x 6= 18
39-44. sc in each st around
Change to Color A: Fold the tail in half. Sc the tail together to close the tail. = 9

Ch 1, turn, inc across= 18


Ch 1, turn, sc across= 18

Ch 1, turn, sc across= 36
Ch 1, turn, inc across= 72
Ch 1, turn, sc across= 72
F/O and weave in the ends

Attach yarn to the sides with a sl st. Approximately between rows 17 and 18 of the body.
Make 6 sc into the body.
1. Ch 1, turn, sc across= 6
2. Ch 1, turn, inc across= 12
3. Ch 1, turn, sc across= 12
4. Ch 1, turn, inc across= 24
F/O and weave in the ends

Attach yarn to top of head with a sl st. Approximately between rows 15 and 16.
Make 10 sc
1. Ch 1, turn, sc across= 10
2. Ch 1, turn, inc across= 20

4. Ch 1, turn, inc across= 40
F/O and weave in ends

Helpful Tips:

Exact Colors and Brand of Yarn Used:


For Purple Fish:
1. Purple: I love this yarn orchid
2. Variegated Yarn: Lion Brand Critter Craze
3. Pink: Red Heart Petal Pink
4. Mint: Red Heart Mint

Yellow Fish:
1. Yellow: Red Heart Daffodil
2. Variegated Yarn: Red Heart Retro Stripe
3. Pink: Red Heart Bubblegum

You can use different eye and nose sizes. You might have to adjust the placements if you
change the sizes.

You can use different hook sizes and weights of yarn. It will just change the size of your Fish and
you might need to adjust eye and nose placement.

How you stuff matters! The type of stuffing you use, how you stuff, all this matters on how your
fish turns out. I prefer Polyfil stuffing but you can use other types.
