INTRODUCTION

1 This document provides the technical description of Armoured Staff Vehicle

(ASV) 436 Basic Installation; it does not describe those items which remain
from the base vehicle AFV 432.

2 The ASV basic installation comprises equipment racks, cabling and items
which are common to all roles of ASV 436. The User need only place his
variation of electronic and other equipment into the places already provided,
fasten it to existing anchorage points and connect to the relevant wiring
harnesses also provided; when this is done the installation is ready to be
operated.

3 The general concept of roleing, re-roleing, configuration and re-

configuration, together with vehicle interconnectivity and the principles
relevant to the way in which all the facilities can be used are described in
AESP 5800-H-280 'Electronic Installations for Staff Users in ASV 436 -
System’.
4 The varieties of electronic and other equipment which have been designed
and provided so that the configuration of electronic equipment provided for a
role can be re-arranged to suit the individual needs of the Staff cell
requirement are described in AESP 5800-H-281 'Electronic Installations for
Staff Users in ASV 436 - Harnesses and Installation Kits'.

VEHICLE EXTERNAL EQUIPMENT

Generator Mounting Frame

5 The Generator Mounting Frame is fabricated from steel angle and is bolted
to bosses welded to the roof of the vehicle. Its location is shown on Fig 1.
The generator is retained on the frame by means of two brackets at its far
side, and at its rear side, by two clamps fastened by thumb nuts.

D.C. Power Inlet Box

6 This is an armoured housing, welded to the rear of the vehicle in the

position shown on Fig 1, to which is bolted a D.C. Power Inlet Panel.

7 The D.C. Power Inlet Panel has three sockets:

7.1 SK 1 PENTHOUSELIGHTING - Carrying a 28 V d.c. supply for

penthouse lighting.

7.2 SK 2 D.C. SUPPLY OUT - carrying a 28 V d.c. supply for use outside the
vehicle.

7.3 SK 3 GENERATORINPUT - for connection to a generator for imported

Power suoPlies and distribution

.
36 Figure 18 is a block diagram of the 28 V D.C. power distribution within
the vehicle. All cabling is routed through ducting with metal covers attached
accordance with TEMPEST requirements, and Fig 19 and Fig 20 show the routeing
of power cables within the vehicles and the relative positions of items of
electronic equipment which they supply.

37 The communications systems may be powered by the vehicle gerierator or by .

an external generator. When the equipment is being powered by either an
internal or an external generator, the set of UK/6TN Radio/Communications
batteries are 'float charged'. During 'silent watch', only the
Radio/Communications batteries are used to supply power. An audible warning
is given at the D.C. Distribution Panel to alert the radio operator when the
battery voltage falls to 21 V; the warning can be muted if required.

38 When operational, each installation can be powered from an external 28 V

d.c. diesel generator. The generator is part of the role kit; a 1.5 kW
generator is used for the majority of roles, a 3.0 kW generator is used for
those roles with heavier power demand. In transit, the generator is stowed on
a frame fixed to the vehicle external roof, but it will only ever be operated
on the ground. The 28 V supply from the generator enters the vehicle through
a D.C. Power Inlet Box and a filter box on the vehicle rear bulkhead and is
passed to the D.C. Distribution Panel.

39 Four 12 V batteries are located under the Staff Users' seats; two 12 V
batteries (radio batteries) are located under the commander's seat; two 12 V
ventilation system batteries and two 12 V vehicle batteries are located on the
shelf next to the driver's seat. All batteries are fully vented to the
outside atmosphere and are easily accessible for maintenance.

40 Power within the vehicle is distributed through the D.C. Distribution

Panel fitted in the base of the Radio Tower. Circuit breakers on the D.C.
Distribution Panel protect the major circuits.

41 A 28 V d.c. supply is taken from the D.C. Distribution Panel, via the
filter box in the vehicle rear bulkhead, as a supply for a penthouse.

42 A 28 V d.c. lighting supply is taken from the rear RH crew light via the
filter box to the external D.C. Power Inlet Box, to be available as a supply
for penthouse lights.

43 No provision is made for connection to mains power supplies.

D.C. Distribution Box

44 The D.C. Distribution Box (FV 2072691) incorporates a D.C. Distribution

Panel and is fixed to the base of the Radio Tower as shown on Fig 16. Full
details of the D.C. Distribution Box are given in AESP 5800-H-281-302
Chapter 32. Fig 21 shows an internal view of the D.C. distribution box.
