Building with Steel
Precision, performance and technical appearance are
all important atvibutes that architects associate with
steel. In this issue of DETAIL, the Fellows Pavillon of
the American Academy in Bertin and the EU Council
headquarters in Brussels comply with this image in
quite different ways,
In contrast, the monumental roof structure over th
Telcel Theatre in Mexico City demonstrates the archaic
sculptural strength of the material, while the sensual
qualities of stee! used for the outer skin of a building
can be recognized in the restrained form of the pump-
Ing station in Bochum with its new facade of partly
Perforated shesting. Constuctional intelligence is the
‘overriding theme of the introductory article about the
lamalla halls of the aviation anginesr Hugo Junkors as
itis, indeed, of the feature on the highly demanding
manufacture and tremendous performance of stae!
monocoque structures.201908 DETAN,
Pure Invention? - The Lamella Halls of
the Aviation Pioneer Hugo Junkers,
Joram Tutsch, Sven Tomack, Rainer Barthel
“Inour day and age, | see the central issua
of bulding in the industalzation of con-
jitutian,” and thi process “ie a question of
materials", Mies van der Rohe wrote in 1924,
With these words, he formulated an issue
that Hugo Junkers had resolved in aireraft
‘onstruction ten years earlier n contrast to
what was standard practice in those days,
Junkers did not build with wood, a natural
‘matorial that was unpradictabla from an an-
gineer’s pont of view. Instead, ne opted
systematically for aeroplanes made entirely
of metal. As early as 1925, Junkers had ex-
perimented in his ov building develop
ments with industrial forms of construction,
and thera, too, he chose motal rathor than’
feancrate. With tha raferm building dopant
‘ment ofthe Junkers werks, he attempted, by
‘mane of a cooperation between the various
company sections. 19 produce a pretabr-
caatad building that could be assembled ac
‘cording to serial principles. The basic fine:
ings he had made in the field of aircraft con-
suction he now applied to engineering
stuctures, and over the years, scientiic
building research was implamantad in the
Junkers plant undar the laboratory cond!
tions ofthe akeratt Indy
‘Aesthetic and formal considerations took @
back seat behind physical and technical re-
‘uirements. His most successful building
fnginearing achievement, tha £o-callac
‘Junkers lamella hal’, was developed, mar-
koled and propagated by the department
for steel construction, The constructional
history of ths hal vl be consicored in the
following paper.

the frst two-stroke opposed-piston gas er:

‘measuring the amount of heat generated in
chemical reactions); he had founded six
‘companies (vith more than 20 further ones
to follow); and he had a tll professorship fer
thermodynamics atthe prestigious Univers
ty of Technology in Aachen. There, he was
motivated by his colleague Hans Raissnr to
take an interest in aviation,
In 1910, he had already patented the so-
called “thick wing”, and only five years iter,
he succeeded with a pioneering construc
tion in ereating the frst al-metal plane —
something which, upto thet time, had been
regarded as impossible. Animated by ani
repressible urge to participate in research
and aided by tho economic davelopmont of
the Junkers works, more than 20 different
aircraft models were devalopad and con-
stucted during his ifetme, the best-known
‘of which ware the Junkers F13 and Junkers
.JU62, nicknamed “Tente Ju’, These were the
most auecesetul passenger planes of the
1920s and 30s,
In 1919, Junkors initiated the fist air route
between Dessau and Weimar and played a
Particiatory role in @ numberof ain.

Inthe 1920s, other spin-off and start-up
‘companies ware founded in Germany as
‘wall as in the Soviet Union, the US, Sweden
and Turkey. The concern retained its base
in Dessau, however, which at that ima ean
be seen as a Mecca for engineers and te
rictana. When the Bauhaus was invited to
establish itself in that prosperous ety in
4925 — with strong support from Junkers —
the company increasingly applied itsei to
the industrialization of building construction,
In 1924, under the drection ofthe architect
Ottokar Paulcsen, tne steal construction de-
partment ofthe Junkers plant applied for ts
first patent: for the so-caled “bar grid’. In the
following years, a civilaw dispute developed
vith the Zallbau Syncicate on account of alle-
dations ofa strong simiarty betwaan the
Junkers system and that of Zolinger. This
‘was setied only in 1928, Before the Junkers
concern was caught up in the world econom.
io orsi as well, lurkers himself managed to
develop the lamella hal into a succosstl
product and to market t worlwide.
A tragic turn of events for Hugo Junkers
and his consortium was the selzure of
power in Germany by the Nazis, whose in
‘rigues and threats he fet as early as 1990.
Within a few months, Junkers was frst dis-
possessed, then ousted from Dessau and
finally, on 3 February 1994, his 75th birth-
day, placed undor house arrestin his hol
day home in Bayrischzel. Exactly one year

‘Stee! buildings traditionally consist of
standard linear eections thet form the struc-

This division into tha skin and bones makes
sense economically and technically, but
ftom a purely structural point of view, it

the structural members.
‘Monocaques, in contrast, are a type of

The architects thomoalvas speak ofa “semi-
