Rationale and Objectives

Tuberculosis is highly prevalent and it can lead to serious problems during disaster
response due to risk of airborne transmission.

Each year, we commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on March 20-22, 2024 to
raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of
TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882
when Dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB,
which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing this illness.

TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers. Each day, over 4100 people
lose their lives to TB and close to 28,000 people fall ill with this preventable and curable
disease. Global efforts to combat TB have saved an estimated 66 million lives since the year
2000. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has reversed years of progress made in the fight to
end TB.

The theme of this year’s World TB Day is “YES! We can end TB!” , aims to inspire
hope and encourage high-level leadership, increased investments, faster uptake of new
WHO recommendations, adoption of innovations, accelerated action, and multi-sectoral
collaboration to combat the TB epidemic.

One of the schemes that DOH is implementing to reduce TB cases is the use of Chest
X-ray as a screening tool for all presumptive TB patients. Also, newest one is Gene X-pert, a
method that detects the presence of TB bacteria in sputum in less than two hours. As part of
measures to stop the spread of the disease, patients with cough that has lasted more than 2
weeks should be tested.

Tuberculosis is completely curable through short-course treatment. Treating TB cases

who are sputum -smear positive at the source is the most effective means of eliminating TB
from the population.

 To increase public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic
consequences of TB;
 To be able to address a wide range of multiple hazards that pose risks to the health of
communities and building up core capacities of the health responders and
communities in managing emergency and disasters.
 To intensify active case finding among vulnerable groups using chest X-ray and gene
