This information page forms part of the process of informed
consent. It should tell you what the research is about and what
taking part will involve. Please read this information page
carefully and ask one of the researchers named above if you
have any questions.
What is the purpose of the project?
The use of Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is rapidly
increasing in all spheres, including higher education. The aim
of this research is to understand how students are using Gen
AI and how the University of Bath can better support them. The
findings from this research will be used to inform University
policy, guidelines, and support.
Why have I been invited to take part?
You have been invited to take part as you are an
Undergraduate Student of the University of Bath in the Faculty
of Humanities and Social Sciences (i.e., you are a student in
one of the following departments: Economics; Education;
Health; Politics, Languages and International Studies;
Psychology; or Social and Policy Sciences).
Do I have to take part?
Before you decide, you should read the information on this
page carefully and ask any questions you may have. On the
next page you will have the option to consent or not. You are
free to withdraw your participation and consent by closing
the browser of the survey at any time. Your responses will be
the browser of the survey at any time. Your responses will be
completely anonymous.
What would taking part involve?
After providing consent you will be asked to complete
questions regarding your attitudes and experiences with Gen
AI and provide demographic information.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no specific benefits of taking part in the project.
However, the information that you and other participants
provide in this project will be used to inform University’s
guidance and support regarding Gen AI.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking
part?
We do not anticipate any disadvantages to you taking part in
the project. If the survey asks a question that you do not want
to answer for any reason, you can choose not to answer. In
order to preserve anonymity, we recommend that you do not
include any identifying information (e.g, names of self or
others) when answering questions.
Who will have access to the information that I provide?
Only the research team will have access to information that
you provide, and this information is anonymous.
What will happen to the data collected and results of the
project?
Only the research team (the research supervisors and their
students) will have access to the anonymous data once this
project is completed. Other researchers at the University of
Bath may conduct related research projects which would
benefit from using the data that you provide. Further use of
your data will only occur if research is given approval
by University of Bath Ethics Committee. Data will continue to
be stored in accordance with current UK data protection
legislation.
Who has reviewed the project?
This project has been given a favourable ethics opinion by the
University of Bath Ethics Committee [reference:3760-4029 ].
How can I withdraw from the project?
If you wish to withdraw your participation before completing the
survey, you can close the webpage of the survey and your data
will not be recorded. However, after you have submitted the
responses, you will not be able to withdraw your participation.
This is because no identifying information will be taken from
you and once submitted, it will not be possible to identify your
responses and remove them from the study. The University of
Bath privacy notice can be found here:
Bath privacy notice can be found here:

What happens if there is a problem?
If you have a concern about any aspect of the project, you
should ask to speak to the researchers who will do their best to
answer any questions. If they are unable to resolve your
concern or you wish to make a complaint regarding the project,
please contact the Research Governance and Compliance
Team at research-ethics@bath.ac.uk.
Who should I contact for more information?

Q27 Thank you for taking the time to complete this questionnaire.
The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of
student perceptions and experiences of using Gen AI
such as Chat GPT, and investigate how the University
of Bath may support students with the use of Gen AI.
To date, there is relatively limited qualitative
literature on this sector, thus this study lls a
signi cant gap in literature. The advancement of AI,
underscores the importance of understanding how it
can be used and how universities can support
students’ usage of it to heighten their University
experience.
